Wisdom Giving Rise to Wisdom, Transformation, and Sustaining Power
Fascicle fifty-three closes with three more ten-fold answers: wisdom that gives rise to further wisdom by knowing everything from a sentient being's understanding to an unbroken buddha-seed, ten kinds of transformation reaching from a bodhisattva's own body to the act of teaching itself, and ten kinds of sustaining power spanning the Buddha, karma, time, and wisdom.
Wisdom That Multiplies Itself
The fascicle's final list names a wisdom that produces more wisdom simply by knowing things — a sentient being's understanding, a world turned face-down or face-up, an unbroken buddha-seed — before the questions turn to transformation and to sustaining power, ending fascicle fifty-three on ten kinds of support ranging from the Buddha's own power down to time itself.
"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of wisdom that give rise to further wisdom. What are these ten? Namely: the wisdom that gives rise to further wisdom through knowing the understanding of every sentient being; the wisdom that gives rise to further wisdom through knowing the many distinct differences among every buddha-land; the wisdom that gives rise to further wisdom through knowing the boundaries of the net of the ten directions; the wisdom that gives rise to further wisdom through knowing every world turned face-down, face-up, and every other way; the wisdom that gives rise to further wisdom through knowing the single nature and the vast abiding of every distinct nature within every dharma; the wisdom that gives rise to further wisdom through knowing every kind of distinct body; the wisdom that gives rise to further wisdom through knowing that every worldly inverted, deluded thought has nothing at all to attach to; the wisdom that gives rise to further wisdom through knowing that every dharma, in the end, transcends through one and the same path; the wisdom that gives rise to further wisdom through knowing that the tathāgata's own spiritual power can enter the whole dharma-realm; and the wisdom that gives rise to further wisdom through knowing that the buddha-seed within every sentient being of the three times is never cut off. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide in this dharma, there is no dharma they do not fully penetrate. Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of transformation. What are these ten? Namely: transformation regarding every sentient being; transformation regarding every body; transformation regarding every land; transformation regarding every offering; transformation regarding every sound; transformation regarding every practice and vow; transformation regarding teaching and taming every sentient being; transformation regarding every attainment of perfect awakening; transformation regarding every expounding of the dharma; and transformation regarding every empowerment. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide in this dharma, they become entirely complete in every unsurpassed dharma of transformation.
Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of sustaining power. What are these ten? Namely: the sustaining power of the Buddha; the sustaining power of the dharma; the sustaining power of sentient beings; the sustaining power of karma; the sustaining power of practice; the sustaining power of vow; the sustaining power of domain; the sustaining power of time; the sustaining power of goodness; and the sustaining power of wisdom. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide in this dharma, they attain unsurpassed, sovereign sustaining power over every dharma. Fascicle Fifty-Three of the Avataṃsaka Sūtra.
知三世一切眾生佛種不斷出生智慧 — the wisdom that gives rise to further wisdom through knowing that the buddha-seed within every sentient being of the three times is never cut off. Placed as the final entry in the list, this knowledge closes the set on a claim about continuity rather than about any particular skill or domain — fitting, since the list itself is named for wisdom that keeps producing more of itself, mirroring at the level of practice the very unbrokenness it describes in the buddha-seed.
Part 696 Complete — Fascicle 53 Complete
This completes fascicle fifty-three of eighty. Chapter thirty-eight, 離世間品, continues without a break into fascicle fifty-four, where Part 697 opens with ten kinds of great consolation a bodhisattva feels at the thought of every future buddha yet to come.
