Ten Things a Bodhisattva Relies Upon, Ten Fearless Minds
Ten kinds of reliance — offerings to buddhas, roots of goodness, the pāramitās, the measureless mind of awakening itself — ground bodhisattva practice, and ten further conditions give rise to a fearless mind, from protecting the true dharma after the Buddha's nirvāṇa to taming every class of deva, nāga, and spirit being by name.
What Practice Stands On, What Fear Cannot Touch
The list of ten reliances reads almost as a foundation poured beneath everything the chapter has already described — offerings, taming beings, drawing near good friends, the pāramitās — before the questions turn to fearlessness itself, naming conditions that range from destroying false doctrines to simply never sparing one's own body or life.
"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of reliance, and relies upon them to carry out bodhisattva practice. What are these ten? Namely: relying on making offerings to every buddha, they carry out bodhisattva practice; relying on taming every sentient being, they carry out bodhisattva practice; relying on drawing near to every good friend, they carry out bodhisattva practice; relying on accumulating every root of goodness, they carry out bodhisattva practice; relying on adorning and purifying every buddha-land, they carry out bodhisattva practice; relying on never abandoning any sentient being, they carry out bodhisattva practice; relying on entering deeply into every pāramitā, they carry out bodhisattva practice; relying on fulfilling every bodhisattva vow, they carry out bodhisattva practice; relying on the measureless mind of awakening, they carry out bodhisattva practice; and relying on the awakening of every buddha, they carry out bodhisattva practice. These are the ten. A bodhisattva relies upon these to carry out bodhisattva practice.
Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten ways of giving rise to a fearless mind. What are these ten? Namely: extinguishing every obstructing karma, they give rise to a fearless mind; upholding and protecting the true dharma after the Buddha's nirvāṇa, they give rise to a fearless mind; subduing every māra, they give rise to a fearless mind; never sparing their own body or life, they give rise to a fearless mind; destroying every heretical, false doctrine, they give rise to a fearless mind; bringing every sentient being to joy, they give rise to a fearless mind; bringing every assembly entirely to joy, they give rise to a fearless mind; taming every deva, nāga, yakṣa, gandharva, asura, garuḍa, kiṃnara, and mahoraga, they give rise to a fearless mind; leaving behind the grounds of the two vehicles and entering a profound dharma, they give rise to a fearless mind; and carrying out bodhisattva practice across unspeakably, unspeakably many kalpas with a mind never weary, they give rise to a fearless mind. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide in this dharma, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed, great, fearless mind of wisdom.
於佛滅後護持正法,發無畏心 — upholding and protecting the true dharma after the Buddha's nirvāṇa, they give rise to a fearless mind. Placed second in the list, right after extinguishing obstructing karma, this entry locates fearlessness not in facing an external threat but in a specific historical responsibility: continuing to protect the teaching once its teacher is no longer present to defend it himself.
Part 699 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-eight, 離世間品, in fascicle fifty-four. Part 700 opens ten kinds of mind free of doubt, each unfolding as a bodhisattva's own extended vow — beginning with the resolve to draw in every sentient being through generosity and every pāramitā at once.
