Ten Kinds of Mind Free of Doubt Begin
Each of the ten minds free of doubt takes the same shape: a bodhisattva resolves on something vast — drawing in every sentient being through the pāramitās, adorning every world with light, cultivating practice for a number of beings beyond every possible reckoning — and the text declares, after each one, that doubt arising in response to it is simply not possible.
A Doubt Declared Impossible, Ten Times Over
Each entry follows an identical pattern: a bodhisattva's own resolve, stated in full, followed by the same closing formula — that doubt at this exact moment is decisively impossible. The resolves themselves range from ordinary generosity to a vow to teach a number of beings that exceeds every unit of counting this sūtra has ever used, including "unspeakably unspeakable" itself.
"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva gives rise to ten kinds of mind free of doubt, so that their mind harbors no doubt or confusion regarding any dharma of the Buddha. What are these ten? Namely: a bodhisattva-mahāsattva gives rise to a thought such as this: 'I shall draw in every sentient being through generosity; I shall draw in every sentient being through moral discipline, patience, diligence, meditative concentration, wisdom, loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity.' At the moment this thought arises, it is decisively free of doubt; that any doubt should arise is simply not possible. This is the first mind free of doubt. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva further thinks: 'Whatever buddhas appear in the world in the future, I shall attend upon and make offerings to every one of them.' At the moment this thought arises, it is decisively free of doubt; that any doubt should arise is simply not possible. This is the second mind free of doubt. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva further thinks: 'I shall adorn every world entirely with every kind of wondrous net of light.' At the moment this thought arises, it is decisively free of doubt; that any doubt should arise is simply not possible. This is the third mind free of doubt. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva further thinks: 'I shall cultivate bodhisattva practice throughout every future kalpa. Sentient beings without number, without measure, without limit, without equal, uncountable, inexpressible, inconceivable, immeasurable, unspeakable, and unspeakably unspeakable, beyond every reckoning, throughout the entire dharma-realm and realm of empty space — I shall bring every one of them to ripeness entirely through unsurpassed teaching and taming.' At the moment this thought arises, it is decisively free of doubt; that any doubt should arise is simply not possible. This is the fourth mind free of doubt.
A bodhisattva-mahāsattva further thinks: 'I shall cultivate bodhisattva practice, fulfill my great vow, become complete in all-knowing wisdom, and abide within it.' At the moment this thought arises, it is decisively free of doubt; that any doubt should arise is simply not possible. This is the fifth mind free of doubt. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva further thinks: 'I shall universally carry out bodhisattva practice on behalf of every world, becoming a pure light for every dharma, illuminating every dharma of the Buddha there is.' At the moment this thought arises, it is decisively free of doubt; that any doubt should arise is simply not possible. This is the sixth mind free of doubt. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva further thinks: 'I shall know that every dharma is entirely the Buddha's own dharma, and, according to the minds of sentient beings, expound it for them, entirely bringing them to awakened understanding.' At the moment this thought arises, it is decisively free of doubt; that any doubt should arise is simply not possible. This is the seventh mind free of doubt.
無數、無量、無邊、無等、不可數、不可稱、不可思、不可量、不可說、不可說不可說 — without number, without measure, without limit, without equal, uncountable, inexpressible, inconceivable, immeasurable, unspeakable, and unspeakably unspeakable. The fourth vow pauses to stack ten separate terms for "beyond counting" before naming its actual object — the totality of sentient beings — as if ordinary language needed this much preparation before it could even gesture at the scale involved, let alone the vow to teach every one of them.
Part 700 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-eight, 離世間品, in fascicle fifty-four. Part 701 completes the ten kinds of mind free of doubt with vows to enter every dharma without obstruction and to attain perfect awakening beyond every mark, then opens ten kinds of inconceivable dharma.
