Inconceivable Dharmas Conclude, Skillful Secret Speech Begins

The tenth inconceivable dharma closes on a familiar paradox — entering the dharma-realm entirely by entering nowhere — before the questions turn to a different mode of speech, one that can hold contradictory truths at once: that the Buddha's dharma and the world's dharma are the same thing, yet never to be confused with one another, and that every point in empty space already holds a world, either forming or collapsing, with no gap left over.

A World in Every Point of Space

The final inconceivable dharma closes an entire list built from paradox with one more: entering everywhere by entering nowhere. The skillful, secret speech that follows keeps that same double vision going — a single sūtra covering every place a being might be born, and a striking cosmological claim that no point in the whole of empty space is ever left without a world in it.

"In thought after thought, entering the concentration of cessation, exhausting every outflow yet not realizing the ultimate limit, and yet not exhausting the roots of goodness tainted by outflow; though knowing that every dharma is free of outflow, still knowing the exhaustion of outflow, and also knowing the extinction of outflow; though knowing that the Buddha's dharma is itself the world's dharma, and the world's dharma is itself the Buddha's dharma, yet never discriminating a worldly dharma within the Buddha's dharma, nor a buddha-dharma within a worldly dharma; every dharma entirely enters the dharma-realm, because it enters nowhere at all; and knowing that every dharma is without duality, because it undergoes no change — this is the tenth inconceivable dharma. Son of the Buddha! These are the bodhisattva-mahāsattva's ten inconceivable dharmas. If bodhisattvas abide within them, they attain the unsurpassed inconceivable dharma shared by every buddha.

Ru-Yi Translation

Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of skillful, secret speech. What are these ten? Namely: skillful, secret speech regarding every sūtra of the Buddha; skillful, secret speech regarding every place of taking birth; skillful, secret speech regarding every bodhisattva's spiritual transformation and attainment of perfect awakening; skillful, secret speech regarding the karmic result of every sentient being; skillful, secret speech regarding the defilement and purity that arise in every sentient being; skillful, secret speech regarding the ultimate, unobstructed gateway of every dharma; skillful, secret speech regarding how, throughout the whole realm of empty space, every single place holds a world either forming or collapsing, with no gap left empty anywhere; skillful, secret speech regarding how, throughout the whole dharma-realm and every one of the ten directions, down to the subtlest place, a tathāgata is present, manifesting his first birth, all the way to attaining buddhahood and entering parinirvāṇa, filling the dharma-realm entirely, each one distinctly seen; skillful, secret speech regarding how, though seeing that every sentient being is equally nirvāṇa itself and undergoes no change, one still never abandons the great vow, so as to bring the vow for all-knowing wisdom, not yet fulfilled, to complete fulfillment; and skillful, secret speech regarding how, though knowing that every dharma is understood not through another's awakening, one still never abandons any good spiritual friend, growing ever more reverent toward the tathāgata, harmonized with every good spiritual friend as without duality, cultivating and planting every root of goodness, dedicating it and abiding in it, sharing the same activity, the same essential nature, the same transcendence, and the same accomplishment. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within these, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed, skillful, secret speech.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

於一切虛空界,一一方處悉有世界或成或壞,間無空處 — throughout the whole realm of empty space, every single place holds a world either forming or collapsing, with no gap left empty anywhere. Named as an instance of "skillful, secret speech" rather than an ordinary cosmological claim, this line suggests that the difficulty here is not factual but rhetorical: saying that space contains no true emptiness at all requires exactly the kind of speech that can hold two things — space as absence, and space as everywhere occupied — without collapsing one into the other.
