Discriminating Wisdom, Samādhi, Universal Entry, and Liberation

Four ten-fold lists move through discriminating wisdom entering śrāvakas, solitary buddhas, and bodhisattvas alike, ten kinds of entry into samādhi, ten kinds of universal entry that unexpectedly include the calamities of fire and flood alongside buddhas and offerings, and ten gateways of liberation, from a single body pervading every world to every world entering a single buddha-land.

Fire and Flood Among the Buddhas

The list of universal entry places the calamities of fire and water directly alongside buddhas, adornments, and offerings — a striking juxtaposition suggesting that a bodhisattva's reach extends as fully into catastrophe as into anything auspicious; the ten gateways of liberation that follow return to more familiar territory, each one a different way of collapsing scale, fitting every world into a single body or a single land.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

火災遍入;水災遍入 — universal entry into the calamity of fire; universal entry into the calamity of water. Set between "every kind of worldly mark" and "every buddha," these two entries name the traditional forces that, in this sūtra's own cosmology, periodically destroy world-systems — placing catastrophe itself, not merely its aftermath or its opposite, among the things a bodhisattva's reach must fully include.
