Adornment, Unmoving Minds, and Vast Minds Never Abandoned
Ten kinds of adornment reach a striking claim — a single land made from the collapse of every land into one — before eleven named kinds of faith anchor a single unmoving mind, and ten profound, vast minds are each declared, one by one, never to be abandoned, from fulfilling a buddha's own awakening to gathering every dharma of every buddha.
Eleven Kinds of Faith in a Single Unmoving Mind
The tenth adornment folds every land into one, and the seventh unmoving mind reaches, on its own, across unspeakably many kalpas for as many lifetimes as there are sentient beings; the eighth then pauses to name eleven distinct qualities of faith all at once, before the final list closes on ten vast minds, each one stated only in the negative — never abandoned — as if the strongest way to describe commitment is to describe its absence and then deny it.
"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of adornment. What are these ten? Namely: the adornment of power, because it cannot be destroyed; the adornment of fearlessness, because nothing can subdue it; the adornment of meaning, because it expounds unspeakable meaning without ever being exhausted; the adornment of dharma, because it observes and expounds the eighty-four thousand collections of dharma without ever forgetting them; the adornment of vow, because every great vow given rise to by any bodhisattva never regresses; the adornment of practice, because it cultivates Samantabhadra's own practice and transcends through it; the adornment of lands, because it makes every land into a single land; the adornment of the universal voice, because it pervades every buddha's world, raining down the rain of dharma; the adornment of sustaining power, because it carries out countless practices throughout every kalpa without ever ceasing; and the adornment of transformation, because it manifests, within the body of a single sentient being, bodies equal in number to every sentient being, causing every sentient being to see and know it, seeking all-knowing wisdom without ever regressing. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide in this dharma, they attain every one of the tathāgata's own unsurpassed adornments of dharma.
Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva gives rise to ten unmoving minds. What are these ten? Namely: an unmoving mind able to give up everything they possess entirely; an unmoving mind that reflects on and observes every dharma of the Buddha; an unmoving mind that recalls and makes offerings to every buddha; an unmoving mind that vows never to trouble or harm any sentient being; an unmoving mind that universally gathers in sentient beings without distinguishing enemy from friend; an unmoving mind that seeks every dharma of the Buddha without ever resting; an unmoving mind that carries out bodhisattva practice for as many unspeakably, unspeakably many kalpas as there are sentient beings, never growing weary and never regressing; an unmoving mind accomplished in rooted faith, undefiled faith, pure faith, utterly pure faith, faith free of stain, penetrating faith, faith that reveres and makes offerings to every buddha, non-regressing faith, inexhaustible faith, indestructible faith, and faith of great joy and exultation; an unmoving mind accomplished in the path of skillful means that gives rise to all-knowing wisdom; and an unmoving mind that, upon hearing the dharma of every bodhisattva practice, believes and receives it without ever slandering it. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide in this dharma, they attain the unsurpassed, unmoving mind of all-knowing wisdom. Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten profound, vast minds that are never abandoned. What are these ten? Namely: the profound, vast mind of fulfilling every buddha's own awakening, never abandoned; the profound, vast mind of teaching and taming every sentient being, never abandoned; the profound, vast mind of never cutting off the lineage of any buddha, never abandoned; the profound, vast mind of drawing near to every good spiritual friend, never abandoned; the profound, vast mind of making offerings to every buddha, never abandoned; the profound, vast mind of single-mindedly seeking every meritorious dharma of the Great Vehicle, never abandoned; the profound, vast mind of cultivating pure conduct and upholding pure precepts in the presence of every buddha, never abandoned; the profound, vast mind of drawing near to every bodhisattva, never abandoned; the profound, vast mind of seeking and, through skillful means, protecting every dharma of the Buddha, never abandoned; and the profound, vast mind of fulfilling every bodhisattva practice and vow, and gathering every dharma of every buddha, never abandoned. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within these, they are able never to abandon any dharma of the Buddha.
剎莊嚴,以一切剎作一剎故 — the adornment of lands, because it makes every land into a single land. Set among adornments of power and fearlessness that describe qualities a bodhisattva has, this entry describes something a bodhisattva does to the very structure of the cosmos — collapsing every land into one — treating that collapse itself as an ornament, a kind of beauty rather than merely a display of scale.
