Ten Kinds of Seal Begin

Unlike the terse parallel phrases filling most of this chapter, each of the ten seals unfolds as a short, concrete scene of its own — a bodhisattva who understands the three kinds of suffering, who meets insult and physical violence without ever abandoning the bodhisattva mind, who refuses to measure the tathāgata's wisdom against any fixed limit at all.

Patience Under Swords, Staves, Tiles, and Stones

Where earlier lists in this chapter answered abstractly, the ten seals answer with scenes: a bodhisattva reviled with harsh words or struck with weapons and debris who never once abandons the bodhisattva mind; another who refuses to place any fixed boundary on the tathāgata's own wisdom, however many buddhas have already confirmed that wisdom has no boundary to find.

"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of seal. What are these ten? Namely: a bodhisattva-mahāsattva, knowing the suffering of suffering, the suffering of change, and the suffering of formations, single-mindedly seeks the Buddha's dharma, never growing lazy, carrying out bodhisattva practice without any weariness, never startled, never afraid, never fearful, never terrified, never abandoning the great vow, seeking all-knowing wisdom, firm and never regressing, all the way to unsurpassed, perfect, complete awakening — this is the first seal. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva, seeing sentient beings who are foolish and deranged, whether they revile and insult with coarse, harsh, evil words, or inflict harm with swords, staves, tiles, or stones, never once abandons the bodhisattva mind because of such circumstances, but remains patient and gentle, single-mindedly cultivating the Buddha's dharma, abiding in the most supreme path, and entering the stage that leaves birth behind — this is the second seal. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva, hearing the profound dharma of the Buddha that corresponds to all-knowing wisdom expounded, is able, through their own wisdom, to believe it profoundly, accept it, understand it, and enter into it — this is the third seal. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva further thinks: "I give rise to a profound mind seeking all-knowing wisdom; I shall become a buddha and attain unsurpassed, perfect, complete awakening. Every sentient being, revolving through the five destinies, undergoes measureless suffering; I shall also cause them to give rise to the mind of awakening, believing profoundly, rejoicing, diligently cultivating with vigor, firm and never regressing." This is the fourth seal.

Ru-Yi Translation

A bodhisattva-mahāsattva knows that the tathāgata's wisdom is without any limit, and never measures the tathāgata's wisdom by any fixed boundary; because the bodhisattva has already heard, in the presence of measureless buddhas, that the tathāgata's wisdom is without limit, they are able not to measure it by any fixed boundary; every word and expression in the world has some fixed limit, and none of them can ever know the tathāgata's own wisdom — this is the fifth seal. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva attains, toward unsurpassed, perfect, complete awakening, the most supreme aspiration, the most profound aspiration, the vast aspiration, the great aspiration, every kind of aspiration, the unsurpassable aspiration, the unsurpassed aspiration, the firm aspiration, the aspiration that no host of māras or heretics together with their followers can ever destroy, and the aspiration for all-knowing wisdom that never regresses; abiding in aspirations such as these, a bodhisattva never regresses from unsurpassed awakening, in the end — this is the sixth seal. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva carries out bodhisattva practice without regard for their own body or life, and nothing can ever obstruct or destroy them, because their mind has already set out toward all-knowing wisdom, because the nature of all-knowing wisdom is constantly present before them, and because they have attained the light of every buddha's own wisdom; they never abandon the Buddha's own awakening, and never abandon any good spiritual friend — this is the seventh seal.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

一切世間文字所說皆有齊限,悉不能知如來智慧 — every word and expression in the world has some fixed limit, and none of them can ever know the tathāgata's own wisdom. The fifth seal does not simply assert that the tathāgata's wisdom is boundless; it identifies exactly why language cannot capture that boundlessness — every word necessarily marks off some limit, so no combination of words could ever describe something that has none. The observation applies as much to this list's own description of the fifth seal as to anything else.

Part 710 Complete

This continues chapter thirty-eight, 離世間品, in fascicle fifty-four. Part 711 completes the ten seals with a bodhisattva who helps others enter the Great Vehicle and never regress, then opens ten kinds of wisdom-illumination and ten unequaled abidings.
