Seals Conclude, Wisdom-Illumination, Unequaled Abidings Begin
The final seals close on shared lineage with every buddha of the three times, before ten kinds of wisdom-illumination range from beholding every buddha to seeing every being die in one place and take birth in another, and a new question opens ten abidings that no sentient being, śrāvaka, or solitary awakened one can ever equal — beginning with observing ultimate reality without ever stopping to claim its realization.
Realizing Without Claiming Realization
The final seals move outward toward helping other beings never regress, before wisdom-illumination lists ten distinct kinds of seeing — a buddha, a being's own death and rebirth, a whole dharma-gateway — and a new list of unequaled abidings opens with a paradox this chapter returns to often: observing the truth directly while deliberately withholding the claim to have realized it, precisely because the work is not yet finished.
"A bodhisattva-mahāsattva, upon seeing a good son or good daughter heading toward the Great Vehicle, causes their mind that seeks the Buddha's dharma to increase, causes them to abide in every root of goodness, causes them to embrace the mind of all-knowing wisdom, and causes them never to regress from unsurpassed awakening — this is the eighth seal. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva causes every sentient being to attain a mind of equality, urges them to diligently cultivate the path of all-knowing wisdom, and, with a mind of great compassion, expounds the dharma for them, causing them never to regress from unsurpassed, perfect, complete awakening forever — this is the ninth seal. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva shares one and the same root of goodness with every buddha of the three times, never cutting off the lineage of any buddha, and ultimately arrives at the wisdom of all-knowing wisdom itself — this is the tenth seal. Son of the Buddha! These are the bodhisattva-mahāsattva's ten kinds of seal. Through these, a bodhisattva swiftly attains unsurpassed, perfect, complete awakening, becoming entirely complete in the tathāgata's own unsurpassed seal of wisdom over every dharma. Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of wisdom-illumination. What are these ten? Namely: the wisdom-illumination of knowing they will certainly attain unsurpassed, perfect, complete awakening; the wisdom-illumination of beholding every buddha; the wisdom-illumination of seeing every sentient being die here and be born there; the wisdom-illumination of understanding every dharma-gateway of the sūtras; the wisdom-illumination of, relying on a good spiritual friend, giving rise to the mind of awakening and accumulating every root of goodness; the wisdom-illumination of manifesting every buddha; the wisdom-illumination of teaching and transforming every sentient being, causing them all to abide in the tathāgata's own ground; the wisdom-illumination of expounding the inconceivable, vast dharma-gateway; the wisdom-illumination of skillfully and fully understanding the spiritual power and majestic might of every buddha; and the wisdom-illumination of fulfilling every pāramitā completely. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide in this dharma, they attain the unsurpassed wisdom-illumination shared by every buddha.
Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten unequaled abidings, which no sentient being, śrāvaka, or solitary awakened one can ever equal. What are these ten? Namely: a bodhisattva-mahāsattva, though observing ultimate reality, does not take hold of its realization, because every one of their vows has not yet been fulfilled — this is the first unequaled abiding. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva plants roots of goodness equal in extent to the whole dharma-realm, and yet has not the slightest attachment within them — this is the second unequaled abiding. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva cultivates bodhisattva practice, knowing it to be like a transformation, because every dharma is entirely still and extinguished, and yet gives rise to no doubt at all regarding the Buddha's dharma — this is the third unequaled abiding. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva, though having left behind every worldly delusion, is still able to set their mind on carrying out bodhisattva practice across unspeakably many kalpas, fulfilling their great vow, and never once giving rise to a weary or wearied mind partway through — this is the fourth unequaled abiding. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has no grasping or attachment toward any dharma at all, because the nature of every dharma is still and extinguished, and yet does not realize nirvāṇa. Why is this? Because the path of all-knowing wisdom has not yet been fulfilled — this is the fifth unequaled abiding.
菩薩摩訶薩雖觀實際而不取證,以一切願未成滿故 — a bodhisattva-mahāsattva, though observing ultimate reality, does not take hold of its realization, because every one of their vows has not yet been fulfilled. What makes this abiding unequaled by even a śrāvaka or a solitary awakened one is not the vision itself, which the text treats as directly available, but the deliberate withholding of a claim that vision would otherwise entitle a person to make — a discipline of postponement, not a limitation of insight.
Part 711 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-eight, 離世間品, in fascicle fifty-four. Part 712 completes fascicle fifty-four with the remaining unequaled abidings, including a bodhisattva who continues serving beings for a single sentient being's sake exactly as they would for all beings at once.
