Ten Minds Free of Inferiority Begin
Fascicle fifty-five opens with nine resolves that scale from confronting every heavenly māra and every heretical teaching to a final, startling vow: giving away one's own hands, feet, flesh, marrow, spouse, and even one's throne to any sentient being who asks, without a single thought of regret and without seeking any reward at all.
From Subduing Māras to Giving Away a Throne
Each of the ten minds free of inferiority takes the form of a bodhisattva's own resolve stated in full — confronting māras and heretics, teaching every being to rejoice, fulfilling every pāramitā throughout the whole dharma-realm — before arriving at the ninth and most demanding of them all: giving up one's own body and even a kingdom to any beggar, with great compassion foremost and no thought of reward.
「佛子！菩薩摩訶薩發十種無下劣心。何等為十？佛子！菩薩摩訶薩作如是念：『我當降伏一切天魔及其眷屬。』是為第一無下劣心。又作是念：『我當悉破一切外道及其邪法。』是為第二無下劣心。又作是念：『我當於一切眾生善言開諭皆令歡喜。』是為第三無下劣心。又作是念：『我當成滿遍法界一切波羅蜜行。』是為第四無下劣心。又作是念：『我當積集一切福德藏。』是為第五無下劣心。
"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva gives rise to ten minds free of inferiority. What are these ten? Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva thinks in this way: 'I shall subdue every heavenly māra together with their whole retinue.' This is the first mind free of inferiority. They further think: 'I shall entirely destroy every heretic and their false teachings.' This is the second mind free of inferiority. They further think: 'I shall, through skillful words, instruct and enlighten every sentient being, causing every one of them to rejoice.' This is the third mind free of inferiority. They further think: 'I shall completely fulfill every pāramitā practice throughout the whole dharma-realm.' This is the fourth mind free of inferiority. They further think: 'I shall accumulate every treasury of merit.' This is the fifth mind free of inferiority.
又作是念：『無上菩提廣大難成，我當修行悉令圓滿。』是為第六無下劣心。又作是念：『我當以無上教化、無上調伏，教化調伏一切眾生。』是為第七無下劣心。又作是念：『一切世界種種不同，我當以無量身成等正覺。』是為第八無下劣心。又作是念：『我修菩薩行時，若有眾生來從我乞手足、耳鼻、血肉、骨髓、妻子、象馬乃至王位，如是一切悉皆能捨，不生一念憂悔之心，但為利益一切眾生，不求果報，以大悲為首，大慈究竟。』是為第九無下劣心。
They further think: 'Unsurpassed awakening is vast and difficult to accomplish; I shall practice until it is entirely and perfectly complete.' This is the sixth mind free of inferiority. They further think: 'I shall, through unsurpassed teaching and unsurpassed taming, teach and tame every sentient being.' This is the seventh mind free of inferiority. They further think: 'Every world differs from every other in every way; I shall attain perfect awakening through measureless bodies.' This is the eighth mind free of inferiority. They further think: 'When I carry out bodhisattva practice, should any sentient being come and beg from me my own hands, feet, ears, nose, blood, flesh, marrow, wife and children, elephants and horses, or even my very throne, I shall be able to give up every one of these entirely, without giving rise to a single thought of regret or sorrow, doing so only to benefit every sentient being, seeking no reward in return, with great compassion foremost and great loving-kindness carried through to the very end.' This is the ninth mind free of inferiority.
不生一念憂悔之心，但為利益一切眾生，不求果報 — without giving rise to a single thought of regret or sorrow, doing so only to benefit every sentient being, seeking no reward in return. The ninth mind free of inferiority names not just the willingness to give away everything, including one's own body, but the precise absence the text insists on afterward: no regret, and no expectation of anything in return — the giving is complete only when both of these are also absent.
