Minds Free of Inferiority Conclude, Mountain-Like Minds Begin

The tenth and final mind free of inferiority names sixteen distinct wisdoms in a row, each one framed as "through no-X, knowing every X" — no duality knowing every duality, no world knowing every world — before a new question opens ten minds exalted like a mountain, beginning with observing that every dharma's own nature is empty, with nothing at all to attain.

Sixteen Wisdoms, Each Built From Its Own Absence

The tenth mind free of inferiority is built entirely from a single repeated pattern — knowing X through the wisdom of no-X — applied sixteen times over to duality, mark, discrimination, world, sentient being, and more, so that everything eventually known is known precisely through the wisdom that has no fixed version of it to hold onto; the mountain-like minds that follow return to more familiar ground, opening with a vow simply to keep cultivating all-knowing wisdom without pause.

"They further think: 'Every buddha of the three times, every dharma of the buddhas, every sentient being, every land, every world, every one of the three times, every realm of empty space, the whole dharma-realm, every realm of designated language, and the whole realm of still, extinguished nirvāṇa — every one of these many distinct dharmas, I shall, through wisdom corresponding to a single thought, entirely know and entirely awaken to, entirely see and entirely realize, entirely cultivate and entirely cut off; and yet, within all of this, there is no discrimination, apart from discrimination, without any kind of distinction, without merit, without domain, neither existent nor non-existent, neither one nor two. Through the wisdom of non-duality I shall know every duality; through the wisdom of no mark I shall know every mark; through the wisdom of non-discrimination I shall know every discrimination; through the wisdom of no difference I shall know every difference; through the wisdom of no distinction I shall know every distinction; through the wisdom of no world I shall know every world; through the wisdom of no age I shall know every age; through the wisdom of no sentient being I shall know every sentient being; through the wisdom of no attachment I shall know every attachment; through the wisdom of no abode I shall know every abode; through the wisdom of no defilement I shall know every defilement; through the wisdom of no exhaustion I shall know every exhaustion; through the wisdom of the ultimate dharma-realm I shall manifest my body throughout every world; through the wisdom apart from speech and sound I shall display unspeakable speech and sound; through the wisdom of a single intrinsic nature I shall enter the absence of any intrinsic nature; and through the wisdom of a single domain I shall manifest every kind of distinct domain; knowing that every dharma is unspeakable, and yet manifesting speech of great sovereign freedom, realizing the ground of all-knowing wisdom; and for the sake of teaching and taming every sentient being, manifesting great spiritual transformation throughout every world.' This is the tenth mind free of inferiority. Son of the Buddha! These are the bodhisattva-mahāsattva's ten minds free of inferiority. If bodhisattvas abide in these minds, they attain every supreme, unsurpassed dharma of the Buddha, free of any inferiority.

Ru-Yi Translation

Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has, toward unsurpassed, perfect, complete awakening, ten kinds of mind exalted like a mountain. What are these ten? Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva constantly sets their mind on diligently cultivating every dharma of all-knowing wisdom — this is the first mind exalted like a mountain. They forever observe that the original nature of every dharma is empty, with nothing at all to be attained — this is the second mind exalted like a mountain. They vow to carry out bodhisattva practice across measureless kalpas, cultivating every pure, white dharma, and because they abide in every pure, white dharma, they come to know and see the tathāgata's own measureless wisdom — this is the third mind exalted like a mountain. For the sake of seeking every dharma of the Buddha, they revere and serve every good spiritual friend with an equal mind, seeking nothing different from them, having no mind that would steal the dharma, giving rise only to reverence, never once entertaining any other intention, and are entirely able to give up everything they possess — this is the fourth mind exalted like a mountain.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

以不二智知一切二,以無相智知一切相 — through the wisdom of non-duality I shall know every duality; through the wisdom of no mark I shall know every mark. The sixteen-fold pattern repeated here never varies its logic: whatever is to be known is known precisely through a wisdom that lacks the very feature being known — mark is known through no-mark, world through no-world — treating absence not as an obstacle to knowledge but as its actual mechanism.

Part 714 Complete

This continues chapter thirty-eight, 離世間品, in fascicle fifty-five. Part 715 continues the mountain-like minds with a bodhisattva who accepts insult and physical torment without ever giving rise to a disturbed or hateful mind, and one who attains ten kinds of exalted merit without ever growing attached to any of them.
