Ocean-Like Wisdom Concludes
The eighth ocean-like wisdom watches every buddha's entire career unfold in every world of the ten directions while remaining unattached to any of it, since every buddha is exactly like a dream; the ninth makes offerings across unspeakable kalpas without seeking reward; the tenth seeks nothing at every buddha's side but the dharma of bodhisattvas, closing the full set of ten.
Every Buddha, Exactly Like a Dream
The eighth wisdom follows a buddha's entire career — awakening beneath the bodhi tree, teaching, and passing into parinirvāṇa — across every world of the ten directions, then explains the bodhisattva's freedom from attachment through a single striking reason: every buddha is known to be exactly like a dream. The ninth and tenth wisdoms that follow close the set of ten with offerings made without seeking reward and a search for nothing but the dharma of bodhisattvas.
"A bodhisattva-mahāsattva enters the present age, observing and reflecting, and within thought after thought universally sees the unspeakably many worlds of every kind throughout the ten directions, in every one of which there are buddhas who have already attained, are now attaining, or will attain unsurpassed awakening — going to the site of awakening beneath the bodhi tree, sitting on auspicious grass, subduing the armies of māra, and attaining unsurpassed, perfect, complete awakening; then rising from this, entering cities and towns, ascending to heavenly palaces, expounding the subtle and wondrous dharma, turning the great dharma wheel, manifesting spiritual powers, taming sentient beings, and finally, having entrusted the dharma of unsurpassed, perfect, complete awakening to others, relinquishing their lifespan and entering parinirvāṇa; and having entered parinirvāṇa, causing the dharma treasury to be compiled and to abide long in the world, adorned with stūpas and every kind of offering. They also see how the sentient beings of that world encounter the buddha and hear the dharma, upholding it, reciting it, reflecting on it, calling it to mind, and growing in wisdom and understanding. Observing in this way, universally throughout the ten directions, and yet never once erring regarding the buddha-dharma. Why is this? Because the bodhisattva-mahāsattva fully understands that every buddha is exactly like a dream, and yet is still able to go to the place of every buddha to revere and make offerings. At such a time, the bodhisattva is not attached to their own self, not attached to any buddha, not attached to any world, not attached to any assembly, not attached to any teaching of dharma, and not attached to any number of kalpas; and yet they still see buddhas and hear the dharma, observe every world, and enter every number of kalpas, never growing weary — this is the eighth ocean-like wisdom.
A bodhisattva-mahāsattva, within every single one of unspeakably, unspeakably many kalpas, makes offerings to and reveres unspeakably, unspeakably many measureless buddhas, manifesting their own passing away here and being born there, making offerings with every kind of offering that surpasses the three realms, and also making offerings to bodhisattvas, śrāvakas, and every great assembly; and after each and every tathāgata enters parinirvāṇa, makes offerings to their relics with unsurpassed offerings, and widely practices giving to satisfy every sentient being. Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva, with a mind that is inconceivable, a mind that seeks no reward, a mind that is ultimate, and a mind that benefits others, throughout unspeakably, unspeakably many kalpas, for the sake of unsurpassed, perfect, complete awakening, makes offerings to buddhas, benefits sentient beings, upholds and protects the true dharma, and reveals and expounds it — this is the ninth ocean-like wisdom. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva, at the place of every buddha, the place of every bodhisattva, and the place of every dharma-teacher, single-mindedly and exclusively seeks the dharma spoken by bodhisattvas, the dharma studied by bodhisattvas, the dharma taught by bodhisattvas, the dharma practiced by bodhisattvas, the dharma that purifies bodhisattvas, the dharma that ripens bodhisattvas, the dharma that tames bodhisattvas, the dharma of bodhisattva equality, the dharma of bodhisattva liberation, and the dharma of bodhisattva total retention; and having attained this dharma, upholds it, recites it, and explains it in detail, never growing weary; causing measureless sentient beings, within the buddha-dharma, to give rise to a mind in accord with all-knowing wisdom, to enter the true mark of reality, and to attain non-regression in unsurpassed, perfect, complete awakening. A bodhisattva, throughout unspeakably, unspeakably many kalpas, is like this and never grows weary — this is the tenth ocean-like wisdom. Son of the Buddha! These are the bodhisattva-mahāsattva's ten kinds of ocean-like wisdom for entering unsurpassed, perfect, complete awakening. If bodhisattvas abide within this dharma, they attain the unsurpassed, great wisdom-ocean of every buddha.
菩薩摩訶薩了知諸佛皆悉如夢,而能往詣一切佛所恭敬供養 — the bodhisattva-mahāsattva fully understands that every buddha is exactly like a dream, and yet is still able to go to the place of every buddha to revere and make offerings. The eighth ocean-like wisdom pairs these two clauses directly with "而能" (and yet is still able to), making the dream-like unreality of every buddha not an obstacle to devotion but precisely what frees a bodhisattva to keep seeing buddhas and offering worship without ever growing weary.
Part 718 Complete
This concludes the ten ocean-like wisdoms and continues chapter thirty-eight, 離世間品, in fascicle fifty-five. Part 719 opens ten kinds of jewel-like abiding with a bodhisattva who journeys to countless buddhas' own worlds to pay them reverence.
