Jewel-Like Abidings Conclude, Diamond-Like Vows Begin

The ninth jewel-like abiding treats a buddha's own teaching and nirvāṇa as constructions of the mind, and the tenth closes the set with a bodhisattva who hears endless predictions of awakening without ever flinching; a new list of ten diamond-like Mahāyāna vow-minds then opens with three vows scaled to the entire dharma-realm — to know every dharma, to liberate every being, and to adorn every world with the finest of every buddha-land.

Vows Scaled to the Whole Dharma-Realm

The jewel-like abidings end on hearing, not startled, unspeakably many predictions of awakening from unspeakably many buddhas — and immediately, without pause, a new list begins that measures every vow against the dharma-realm itself: understanding every dharma without remainder, liberating every being even in the space of a single hair-tip, and adorning every world in the ten directions with the finest ornaments any buddha-land possesses.

Ru-Yi Translation

"A bodhisattva-mahāsattva knows that skillfully teaching the dharma and manifesting nirvāṇa, as the means for delivering sentient beings, are all constructions of the mind alone, neither a distortion nor a deception. Why is this? Because a bodhisattva fully understands that every dharma is equal across the three times, thus-like and unmoving, and that ultimate reality abides nowhere; they see no single sentient being who has already been converted, is now being converted, or will be converted, and also understand for themselves that there is nothing at all to cultivate, not the slightest dharma that can ever be found arising or ceasing — and yet, relying on every dharma, they still cause their vow to remain not empty. This is the ninth jewel-like abiding. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva, at the place of each and every one of the inconceivable, measureless buddhas, hears unspeakably, unspeakably many predictions of awakening, each with its own different name and different number of kalpas; from a single kalpa all the way to unspeakably, unspeakably many kalpas, always hearing in this way, and having heard, carrying out practice, is neither startled nor afraid, neither confused nor deluded, because they know the tathāgata's wisdom is inconceivable, because a tathāgata's words of prediction are never twofold, because their own practice and vow carry an excellent power, and because, being converted according to what is fitting, they cause every vow throughout the whole dharma-realm to be fulfilled in attaining unsurpassed, perfect, complete awakening — this is the tenth jewel-like abiding. Son of the Buddha! These are the bodhisattva-mahāsattva's ten kinds of jewel-like abiding regarding unsurpassed, perfect, complete awakening. If bodhisattvas abide within this dharma, they attain the unsurpassed, great jewel of wisdom of every buddha.

Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva gives rise to ten kinds of diamond-like Mahāyāna vow-mind. What are these ten? Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva thinks in this way: 'Every dharma is without boundary or limit, and can never be exhausted. I shall, with wisdom that spans the three times, awaken to and fully understand every one of them, leaving nothing whatsoever left out.' This is the first diamond-like Mahāyāna vow-mind. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva further thinks: 'Within the space of a single hair-tip there are measureless, boundless sentient beings — how much more so throughout the whole dharma-realm! I shall bring every one of them to cessation through unsurpassed nirvāṇa.' This is the second diamond-like Mahāyāna vow-mind. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva further thinks: 'The worlds of the ten directions are measureless and boundless, without limit or bound, and can never be exhausted. I shall adorn every one of these worlds with the supreme adornments of every buddha's own land, so that every adornment there is entirely real.' This is the third diamond-like Mahāyāna vow-mind.

於一毛端處有無量無邊眾生,何況一切法界 — within the space of a single hair-tip there are measureless, boundless sentient beings — how much more so throughout the whole dharma-realm! The second diamond-like vow-mind builds its scale in a single stroke: it names the smallest imaginable space, fills it with countless beings, and then simply gestures at the entire dharma-realm as obviously vaster still, letting the comparison do the work of describing a scope no number could state directly.

Part 720 Complete

This continues chapter thirty-eight, 離世間品, in fascicle fifty-five. Part 721 continues the diamond-like vow-minds with a bodhisattva who dedicates every root of goodness toward illuminating countless beings, then one who beholds the tathāgata's own body as neither real nor unreal.
