Diamond-Like Vow-Minds Continue

Five more diamond-like vow-minds move from dedicating every root of goodness to illuminating measureless beings and offering it all to measureless buddhas, through seeing the tathāgata's body as neither real nor unreal, to enduring mutilation without a single thought of hatred, and finally vowing to carry out the bodhisattva path across every world in the dharma-realm without fear.

Neither Real Nor Unreal

The sixth diamond-like vow-mind strings together a run of paired negations to describe the tathāgata's own body — neither real nor unreal, neither existent nor nonexistent, neither having mark nor lacking mark — refusing every available category rather than settling on one; the vow-minds that follow apply this same refusal to physical suffering itself, enduring mutilation without a trace of hatred because no dharma, including pain, carries any dual mark to grasp.

"A bodhisattva-mahāsattva further thinks: 'Every sentient being is measureless and boundless, without limit or bound, and can never be exhausted. I shall dedicate every root of goodness toward them, so that the light of unsurpassed wisdom shines upon them.' This is the fourth diamond-like Mahāyāna vow-mind. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva further thinks: 'Every buddha is measureless and boundless, without limit or bound, and can never be exhausted. I shall dedicate the roots of goodness I have planted as offerings to every one of them, entirely and without the slightest omission, and only then shall I attain unsurpassed, perfect, complete awakening.' This is the fifth diamond-like Mahāyāna vow-mind. Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva, seeing every buddha and hearing the dharma spoken, gives rise to great joy, attached neither to their own self nor to any buddha's body, understanding that the tathāgata's body is neither real nor unreal, neither existent nor nonexistent, neither having nature nor lacking nature, neither having form nor lacking form, neither having mark nor lacking mark, and neither arising nor ceasing — in truth possessing nothing at all, and yet not destroying what does exist. Why is this? Because one cannot grasp at any nature or mark whatsoever. This is the sixth diamond-like Mahāyāna vow-mind.

Ru-Yi Translation

Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva, should any sentient being revile and disparage them, beat and flog them, or sever their hands and feet, cut off their ears and nose, gouge out their eyes, or cut off their head, is able to endure every such thing entirely, never once giving rise to a mind of hatred and harm because of it. Throughout unspeakably, unspeakably many, countless kalpas, they carry out bodhisattva practice, gathering in sentient beings and never once abandoning them. Why is this? Because the bodhisattva-mahāsattva has already skillfully observed that no dharma has any dual mark, their mind unmoved and undisturbed, able to give up their own body and endure its suffering. This is the seventh diamond-like Mahāyāna vow-mind. Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva further thinks: 'The kalpas of the future age are measureless and boundless, without limit or bound, and can never be exhausted. I shall, throughout the entirety of those kalpas, carry out the bodhisattva path in a single world, teaching and transforming sentient beings; and just as in this one world, so too throughout the whole dharma-realm, the whole realm of empty space, and every world — and my mind is neither startled, nor afraid, nor fearful. Why is this? Because the dharma of the bodhisattva path should be exactly like this, cultivated for the sake of every sentient being.' This is the eighth diamond-like Mahāyāna vow-mind.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

菩薩摩訶薩已善觀察一切諸法無有二相,心不動亂,能捨自身忍其苦故 — the bodhisattva-mahāsattva has already skillfully observed that no dharma has any dual mark, their mind unmoved and undisturbed, able to give up their own body and endure its suffering. The seventh vow-mind grounds an extreme physical endurance in a purely conceptual observation: because no dharma carries a "dual mark" — no built-in split between, say, harmer and harmed, or pain and the one who suffers it — the mind that has actually seen this has nothing left to react with.
