Ten Kinds of Attaining Wisdom, Ten Vast Minds

Ten different paths to wisdom range from sovereign freedom in giving to instantly reaching unspeakably many buddha-lands within a single thought; a second list of ten then names a single vast mind arising from ten different objects of contemplation — buddhas, sentient beings, empty space, karmic retribution, and a tathāgata's own wondrous voice among them.

One Mind, Ten Objects

The second list here repeats its own formula ten times, each line differing only in what is being observed — every buddha, the whole realm of sentient beings, every dharma as empty space itself, the fruits of karma, a tathāgata's wondrous voice — while the mind that arises from each contemplation stays exactly the same: measureless, boundless, and vast.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of attaining wisdom. What are these ten? Namely: wisdom attained through sovereign freedom in giving; wisdom attained through profound understanding of every buddha-dharma; wisdom attained through entering the tathāgata's boundless wisdom; wisdom attained through being able to resolve every doubt in every question and answer; wisdom attained through entering the meaning known to the wise; wisdom attained through profoundly understanding every tathāgata's skillful speech within every buddha-dharma; wisdom attained through profoundly understanding that even a small root of goodness planted at the place of any buddha will necessarily fulfill every pure, wholesome dharma and obtain the tathāgata's measureless wisdom; wisdom attained through accomplishing a bodhisattva's inconceivable abiding; wisdom attained through being able, within a single thought, to go to unspeakably many buddha-lands; and wisdom attained through awakening to every buddha's own awakening, entering the whole dharma-realm to hear and uphold the dharma spoken by every buddha, and deeply entering the manifold adorned speech of every tathāgata. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within this dharma, they attain the unsurpassed wisdom of direct realization possessed by every buddha.

Ru-Yi Translation

Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of giving rise to a measureless, boundless, vast mind. What are these ten? Namely: at the place of every buddha, giving rise to a measureless, boundless, vast mind; observing the whole realm of sentient beings, giving rise to a measureless, boundless, vast mind; observing every land, every age, and the whole dharma-realm, giving rise to a measureless, boundless, vast mind; observing that every dharma is exactly like empty space, giving rise to a measureless, boundless, vast mind; observing the vast practice of every bodhisattva, giving rise to a measureless, boundless, vast mind; rightly recollecting every buddha of the three times, giving rise to a measureless, boundless, vast mind; observing the inconceivable fruits and retributions of every karmic deed, giving rise to a measureless, boundless, vast mind; adorning and purifying every buddha-land, giving rise to a measureless, boundless, vast mind; universally entering every great assembly of every buddha, giving rise to a measureless, boundless, vast mind; and observing the wondrous voice of every tathāgata, giving rise to a measureless, boundless, vast mind. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide in this mind, they attain the measureless, boundless, vast ocean of wisdom of every buddha-dharma.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

觀察一切法皆如虛空,發無量無邊廣大心 — observing that every dharma is exactly like empty space, giving rise to a measureless, boundless, vast mind. Placed fourth among ten otherwise concrete objects of contemplation — buddhas, sentient beings, karmic retribution, a tathāgata's voice — this one names the absence of any object at all, treating emptiness itself as just one more thing capable of provoking the same vast mind as everything else on the list.
