Ten Kinds of Hidden Treasury, Ten Kinds of Discipline

Ten kinds of hidden treasury locate the treasury not in any place but in every dharma itself — a treasury of right reflection, of eloquence, of skillfully understanding that even a kalpa abides like an illusion; ten kinds of discipline then follow, moving from an unbreakable faith toward every buddha to the plain, active work of subduing every māra.

The Treasury Is the Dharma Itself

Every one of the ten hidden treasuries names something already discussed at length elsewhere in this chapter — right reflection, dhāraṇī, eloquence, seeing buddhas, joy and faith — and simply calls it a treasury, hidden in plain sight within the dharma rather than buried anywhere else; the ten kinds of discipline that follow shift from this inward description to outward conduct, closing on the active work of subduing every māra.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of hidden treasury. What are these ten? Namely: knowing that every dharma is a treasury for arousing meritorious practice; knowing that every dharma is a treasury of right reflection; knowing that every dharma is a treasury of dhāraṇī's illumination; knowing that every dharma is a treasury for eloquent exposition; knowing that every dharma is an unspeakable treasury of true, wholesome awakening; knowing that every buddha's own sovereign spiritual power is a treasury of observation and manifestation; knowing that every dharma is a treasury that skillfully brings forth equality; knowing that every dharma is a treasury for constantly seeing every buddha; knowing that every inconceivable kalpa is a treasury of skillfully understanding that all abides exactly like an illusion; and knowing that every buddha and bodhisattva is a treasury for giving rise to joy and pure faith. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within this dharma, they attain the unsurpassed, great treasury of wisdom-dharma of every buddha, and are able to tame every sentient being.

Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of discipline. What are these ten? Namely: the discipline of never slandering any buddha-dharma; the discipline of an unbreakable mind of joyful faith toward every buddha; the discipline of giving rise to reverence and respect toward every bodhisattva; the discipline of never abandoning a mind of loving delight toward every good spiritual friend; the discipline of never giving rise to a mind that dwells on becoming a śrāvaka or a solitary awakened one; the discipline of staying far from anything that would cause regression from the bodhisattva path; the discipline of never giving rise to a mind that would harm any sentient being; the discipline of cultivating every root of goodness to its ultimate completion; the discipline of being able to subdue every māra; and the discipline of bringing every pāramitā to complete fulfillment. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within this dharma, they attain the unsurpassed, great discipline of wisdom.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

知一切不思議劫是善了皆如幻住藏 — knowing that every inconceivable kalpa is a treasury of skillfully understanding that all abides exactly like an illusion. Time itself becomes a treasury here, not because kalpas contain anything hidden, but because grasping their illusion-like nature is itself the wealth a bodhisattva draws from contemplating them.
