Fascicle 56 Begins, Ten Kinds of Unobstructed Function
Fascicle fifty-six opens with a list of ten unobstructed functions — toward sentient beings, lands, dharma, body, vows, domains, wisdom, spiritual penetration, spiritual power, and power itself — each of which the text then unpacks with its own set of ten. This Part covers the overview and the first two: unobstructed function toward sentient beings and toward every land.
A Single Pore, Every Being
The unobstructed function toward sentient beings ranges from a purely conceptual observation — that no sentient being, strictly speaking, exists — to a startling physical image: placing every sentient being within a single pore without the slightest crowding. The unobstructed function toward lands that follows applies the same freedom to space itself, folding every land into one and expanding one land to hold them all.
佛子！菩薩摩訶薩有十種無礙用。何等為十？所謂：眾生無礙用；國土無礙用；法無礙用；身無礙用；願無礙用；境界無礙用；智無礙用；神通無礙用；神力無礙用；力無礙用。「佛子！云何為菩薩摩訶薩眾生等無礙用？「佛子！菩薩摩訶薩有十種眾生無礙用。何等為十？所謂：知一切眾生無眾生無礙用；知一切眾生但想所持無礙用；為一切眾生說法未曾失時無礙用；普化現一切眾生界無礙用；置一切眾生於一毛孔中而不迫隘無礙用；為一切眾生示現他方一切世界令其悉見無礙用；為一切眾生示現釋、梵、護世諸天身無礙用；為一切眾生示現聲聞、辟支佛寂靜威儀無礙用；為一切眾生示現菩薩行無礙用；為一切眾生示現諸佛色身相好、一切智力、成等正覺無礙用。是為十。
"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of unobstructed function. What are these ten? Namely: unobstructed function toward sentient beings; unobstructed function toward lands; unobstructed function toward the dharma; unobstructed function toward the body; unobstructed function toward vows; unobstructed function toward domains; unobstructed function toward wisdom; unobstructed function of spiritual penetration; unobstructed function of spiritual power; and unobstructed function of power. Son of the Buddha! What is a bodhisattva-mahāsattva's unobstructed function toward sentient beings, and the rest? Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of unobstructed function toward sentient beings. What are these ten? Namely: the unobstructed function of knowing that no sentient being exists among all sentient beings; the unobstructed function of knowing that every sentient being is sustained by nothing but conception; the unobstructed function of teaching the dharma to every sentient being without ever once missing the right moment; the unobstructed function of universally transforming and manifesting within the whole realm of sentient beings; the unobstructed function of placing every sentient being within a single pore without any crowding; the unobstructed function of manifesting every world of every other direction for every sentient being, causing them all to see it; the unobstructed function of manifesting, for every sentient being, the bodies of Śakra, Brahmā, and the guardian devas of the world; the unobstructed function of manifesting, for every sentient being, the tranquil bearing of a śrāvaka or pratyekabuddha; the unobstructed function of manifesting bodhisattva practice for every sentient being; and the unobstructed function of manifesting, for every sentient being, every buddha's own physical form and its excellent marks, every power of all-knowing wisdom, and the attainment of complete, right awakening. These are the ten.
「佛子！菩薩摩訶薩有十種國土無礙用。何等為十？所謂：一切剎作一剎無礙用；一切剎入一毛孔無礙用；知一切剎無有盡無礙用；一身結跏坐充滿一切剎無礙用；一身中現一切剎無礙用；震動一切剎不令眾生恐怖無礙用；以一切剎莊嚴具莊嚴一剎無礙用；以一剎莊嚴具莊嚴一切剎無礙用；以一如來一眾會遍一切佛剎示現眾生無礙用；一切小剎、中剎、大剎、廣剎、深剎、仰剎、覆剎、側剎、正剎，遍諸方網，無量差別，以此普示一切眾生無礙用。是為十。
Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of unobstructed function toward lands. What are these ten? Namely: the unobstructed function of making every land into a single land; the unobstructed function of causing every land to enter a single pore; the unobstructed function of knowing that every land can never be exhausted; the unobstructed function of sitting cross-legged with a single body and filling every land; the unobstructed function of manifesting every land within a single body; the unobstructed function of shaking every land without ever causing sentient beings fear; the unobstructed function of adorning a single land with the adornments of every land; the unobstructed function of adorning every land with the adornments of a single land; the unobstructed function of manifesting, for sentient beings, a single tathāgata and a single assembly throughout every buddha-land; and the unobstructed function of universally showing every sentient being every small land, medium land, great land, vast land, deep land, upturned land, inverted land, tilted land, and upright land, pervading the net of every direction in measureless variety. These are the ten.
震動一切剎不令眾生恐怖 — shaking every land without ever causing sentient beings fear. Placed among functions of pure spatial manipulation — folding lands into a pore, filling every land with a single body — this one entry adds a condition none of the others state: the shaking itself is unobstructed only because it never frightens anyone, making the beings' peace of mind part of what "unobstructed" means here.
