Unobstructed Function Toward Vows and Domains
The unobstructed function toward vows moves from taking every bodhisattva's own vow as one's own to a final entry built from weather itself — clouds of dharma, lightning of liberation, thunder, and a rain of ambrosia; the unobstructed function toward domains that follows names ten pairs, each one abiding fully in one domain while never once abandoning its apparent opposite.
Abiding in One Domain, Never Leaving Its Opposite
Every one of the ten unobstructed functions toward domains follows the same shape: abiding fully in one thing — a buddha's domain, nirvāṇa, stillness, empty space itself — while never once abandoning what would ordinarily seem its opposite: māra's domain, birth and death, distraction, the idle discourse of every sentient being. No domain here excludes its own contrary.
"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of unobstructed function toward vows. What are these ten? Namely: the unobstructed function of taking every bodhisattva's vow as one's own vow; the unobstructed function of manifesting one's own attainment of right awakening through the power of every buddha's vow to attain awakening; the unobstructed function of attaining unsurpassed, perfect, complete awakening oneself in accordance with whichever sentient being is being transformed; the unobstructed function of never once interrupting a great vow throughout every boundless kalpa; the unobstructed function of staying far from a body of consciousness, not attached to a body of wisdom, and manifesting every kind of body through a vow of sovereign freedom; the unobstructed function of giving up one's own body to bring another's vow to fulfillment; the unobstructed function of universally teaching and transforming every sentient being without ever abandoning the great vow; the unobstructed function of carrying out bodhisattva practice throughout every kalpa without ever interrupting the great vow; the unobstructed function of manifesting the attainment of right awakening within a single pore, and, through the power of that vow, filling every buddha-land, manifesting this in just the same way for each and every sentient being throughout unspeakably, unspeakably many worlds; and the unobstructed function of speaking a single phrase of dharma that pervades the whole dharma-realm, raising great clouds of true dharma, flashing lightning of liberation, sounding the thunder of real dharma, and raining down rain with the taste of ambrosia, saturating the whole realm of sentient beings through the power of the great vow. These are the ten.
Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of unobstructed function toward domains. What are these ten? Namely: the unobstructed function of abiding in the domain of the dharma-realm without ever abandoning the domain of sentient beings; the unobstructed function of abiding in the domain of a buddha without ever abandoning the domain of māra; the unobstructed function of abiding in the domain of nirvāṇa without ever abandoning the domain of birth and death; the unobstructed function of entering the domain of all-knowing wisdom without ever cutting off the domain of the bodhisattva lineage; the unobstructed function of abiding in the domain of stillness without ever abandoning the domain of distraction; the unobstructed function of abiding in a domain with no going and no coming, no idle discourse, no form, no essential nature, and no speech, exactly like empty space, without ever abandoning the domain of every sentient being's idle discourse; the unobstructed function of abiding in the domain of every power and liberation without ever abandoning the domain of every place in every direction; the unobstructed function of entering the domain where no sentient being's limit can be found without ever abandoning the teaching and transformation of every sentient being; the unobstructed function of abiding in the domain of meditative concentration, liberation, spiritual penetration, clear wisdom, and stillness, while still manifesting birth in every world; and the unobstructed function of abiding in the domain of every adorned tathāgata practice that attains right awakening, while still manifesting the tranquil bearing of every śrāvaka and pratyekabuddha. These are the ten.
在涅槃境界而不捨生死境界 — abiding in the domain of nirvāṇa without ever abandoning the domain of birth and death. Placed third among ten pairs of domains, this entry states most directly what the whole list is doing: the two domains are not reconciled or blended into something in between, but held together exactly as they are, each fully present without displacing the other.
