Unobstructed Function of Spiritual Power and Power Complete

Spiritual power ties countless mountains of adamant to a single hair, turns unspeakably many kalpas into one, and survives every world's destruction by water, fire, and wind — always adding the same condition: never once causing a sentient being fear. Ten kinds of power then close the entire topic of unobstructed function, ending on great compassion that never abandons a single being.

Never Once Causing Fear

Four separate entries in the unobstructed function of spiritual power name an act of world-scale violence — tying mountains to a hair, casting worlds beyond other worlds, surviving fire and flood — only to attach the same qualifying clause each time: without ever causing a sentient being fear. The ten kinds of power that follow then bring the entire topic of unobstructed function, spanning five Parts, to its close.

"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of unobstructed function of spiritual power. What are these ten? Namely: the unobstructed function of placing unspeakably many worlds within a single mote of dust; the unobstructed function of manifesting, within a single mote of dust, every buddha-land equal to the whole dharma-realm; the unobstructed function of placing the water of every great ocean within a single pore, circling back and forth throughout the worlds of the ten directions, without ever disturbing a single sentient being; the unobstructed function of taking unspeakably many worlds within one's own body, and manifesting every kind of spiritual accomplishment there; the unobstructed function of tying countless cakravāḍa mountains of adamant to a single hair and carrying them while wandering through every world, without ever causing a sentient being's mind any fear; the unobstructed function of turning unspeakably many kalpas into a single kalpa, and a single kalpa into unspeakably many kalpas, manifesting within them every distinct stage of formation and destruction, without ever causing a sentient being's mind any fear; the unobstructed function of manifesting every kind of destruction by water, fire, and wind throughout every world, without ever troubling a sentient being; the unobstructed function of being able, when every world is destroyed by the three calamities, to protect and preserve every sentient being's own means of livelihood without any loss; the unobstructed function of holding inconceivable worlds in a single hand and casting them beyond unspeakably many other worlds, without ever causing a sentient being a single thought of fright; and the unobstructed function of teaching that every land is exactly the same as empty space, causing every sentient being to attain understanding. These are the ten.

Ru-Yi Translation

Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of unobstructed function of power. What are these ten? Namely: the unobstructed function of the power over sentient beings, because they teach and tame them without ever forsaking them; the unobstructed function of the power over lands, because they manifest unspeakably many adornments and adorn them; the unobstructed function of the power of the dharma, because they cause every body to enter what has no body; the unobstructed function of the power over kalpas, because their practice is never interrupted; the unobstructed function of the power of a buddha, because they awaken those who are asleep; the unobstructed function of the power of practice, because they gather in every bodhisattva practice; the unobstructed function of the power of a tathāgata, because they deliver every sentient being; the unobstructed function of the power that needs no teacher, because they awaken to every dharma by themselves; the unobstructed function of the power of all-knowing wisdom, because they attain right awakening through all-knowing wisdom; and the unobstructed function of the power of great compassion, because they never abandon any sentient being. These are the ten. Son of the Buddha! These are called the bodhisattva-mahāsattva's ten kinds of unobstructed function. Whoever attains these ten unobstructed functions, whether they wish to attain unsurpassed, perfect, complete awakening or not, meets with no resistance in following their own wish, and even upon attaining right awakening, still never interrupts the carrying out of bodhisattva practice. Why is this? Because a bodhisattva-mahāsattva, having given rise to a great vow, enters the boundless gate of unobstructed function, manifesting it skillfully.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

於阿耨多羅三藐三菩提欲成、不成,隨意無違 — whether they wish to attain unsurpassed, perfect, complete awakening or not, meets with no resistance in following their own wish. The closing line of this entire topic, spanning ten kinds of unobstructed function, does not describe awakening itself as the point; it describes the freedom to choose either awakening or its postponement, with neither choice meeting any obstruction — the unobstructed function is the freedom itself, not any particular outcome of it.

Part 733 Complete

This completes the ten kinds of unobstructed function, continuing chapter thirty-eight, 離世間品, in fascicle fifty-six. Part 734 opens ten kinds of playful ease, beginning with a bodhisattva who turns a sentient being's body into a land's body without ever destroying the sentient being's own body.
