Ten Kinds of Playful Ease

Nine short pairs of transformations — sentient being and land, buddha and śrāvaka, nirvāṇa and birth-and-death — each swap their forms without damaging either side; the tenth and longest entry then multiplies a single unmoving body into unspeakably many samādhi-bodies, more than every kalpa could ever exhaust.

Swapping Forms Without Loss

Each of the first nine kinds of playful ease follows an identical pattern: one thing takes on the appearance of its counterpart — a sentient being becomes a land, a śrāvaka becomes a buddha, birth-and-death becomes nirvāṇa — while the original is explicitly said to suffer no damage, diminishment, or increase. The tenth abandons pairing altogether for something closer to infinite regress: one unmoving body giving rise to bodies that give rise to further bodies, outpacing every kalpa that could ever try to count them.

佛子!菩薩摩訶薩有十種遊戲,何等為十?所謂:以眾生身作剎身,而亦不壞眾生身,是菩薩遊戲;以剎身作眾生身,而亦不壞於剎身,是菩薩遊戲;於佛身示現聲聞、獨覺身,而不損減如來身,是菩薩遊戲;於聲聞、獨覺身示現如來身,而不增長聲聞、獨覺身,是菩薩遊戲;於菩薩行身示現成正覺身,而亦不斷菩薩行身,是菩薩遊戲;於成正覺身示現修菩薩行身,而亦不減成菩提身,是菩薩遊戲;於涅槃界示現生死身,而不著生死,是菩薩遊戲;於生死界示現涅槃,亦不究竟入於涅槃,是菩薩遊戲;入於三昧而示現行、住、坐、臥一切業,亦不捨三昧正受,是菩薩遊戲;

"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of playful ease. What are these ten? Namely: turning a sentient being's body into a land's body, without ever destroying the sentient being's own body — this is a bodhisattva's playful ease; turning a land's body into a sentient being's body, without ever destroying the land's own body — this is a bodhisattva's playful ease; manifesting the body of a śrāvaka or a solitary awakened one within a buddha's body, without ever diminishing the tathāgata's own body — this is a bodhisattva's playful ease; manifesting a tathāgata's body within the body of a śrāvaka or a solitary awakened one, without ever enlarging the body of that śrāvaka or solitary awakened one — this is a bodhisattva's playful ease; manifesting the body that attains right awakening within the body of bodhisattva practice, without ever interrupting the body of bodhisattva practice — this is a bodhisattva's playful ease; manifesting the body that cultivates bodhisattva practice within the body that has attained right awakening, without ever diminishing the body that has attained awakening — this is a bodhisattva's playful ease; manifesting a body of birth and death within the realm of nirvāṇa, without ever being attached to birth and death — this is a bodhisattva's playful ease; manifesting nirvāṇa within the realm of birth and death, without ever ultimately entering nirvāṇa — this is a bodhisattva's playful ease; entering samādhi and yet manifesting every activity of walking, standing, sitting, and lying down, without ever abandoning the proper absorption of samādhi — this is a bodhisattva's playful ease;

and hearing and upholding the dharma at the place of a single buddha, one's own body unmoving, and yet, through the power of samādhi, manifesting a separate body within each of unspeakably many buddhas' assemblies — without ever dividing that body, and without ever rising from that absorption — hearing and upholding the dharma there without interruption; and in this way, within thought after thought, each and every samādhi-body gives rise to unspeakably, unspeakably many further samādhi-bodies, so that, proceeding in this order, every kalpa could still be exhausted before a bodhisattva's samādhi-bodies ever could be — this is a bodhisattva's playful ease. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within this dharma, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed, great wisdom of playful ease.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

如是次第一切諸劫猶可窮盡,而菩薩三昧身不可窮盡 — proceeding in this order, every kalpa could still be exhausted before a bodhisattva's samādhi-bodies ever could be. Where the first nine kinds of playful ease each protect one specific thing from loss, the tenth measures a bodhisattva's samādhi-bodies against time itself and declares them the larger quantity — kalpas run out; the bodies do not.
