Ten Kinds of Bodhisattva Domain, Ten Kinds of Power

Ten kinds of bodhisattva domain move through mutual manifestation — a bodhisattva's body from a tathāgata's, a world within empty space, nirvāṇa within birth and death — before closing on a single body filling the whole dharma-realm; ten kinds of power then follow, each one a specific capacity named together with the reason it never fails.

Each Power Named With Its Reason

Where the bodhisattva domains describe pure mutual manifestation without explanation, the ten kinds of power that follow attach a reason to every single one — a profound mind is powerful because it mixes with no worldly sentiment, a vow is powerful because it brings what is sought to fulfillment — so that each power doubles as its own justification.

"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of domain. What are these ten? Namely: manifesting the boundless gate of the dharma-realm, causing sentient beings to enter it — this is a bodhisattva's domain; manifesting the measureless, wondrous adornments of every world, causing sentient beings to enter them — this is a bodhisattva's domain; transforming and going to every realm of sentient beings, skillfully awakening every one of them — this is a bodhisattva's domain; bringing forth a bodhisattva's body from a tathāgata's body, and a tathāgata's body from a bodhisattva's body — this is a bodhisattva's domain; manifesting a world within the realm of empty space, and the realm of empty space within a world — this is a bodhisattva's domain; manifesting the realm of nirvāṇa within the realm of birth and death, and the realm of birth and death within the realm of nirvāṇa — this is a bodhisattva's domain; bringing forth the language of every buddha-dharma from within a single sentient being's own language — this is a bodhisattva's domain; manifesting boundless bodies as a single body, and a single body as every kind of distinct body — this is a bodhisattva's domain; filling the whole dharma-realm with a single body — this is a bodhisattva's domain; and causing every sentient being, within a single thought, to give rise to the mind of awakening, each one manifesting measureless bodies and attaining complete, right awakening — this is a bodhisattva's domain. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within this dharma, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed, great domain of wisdom.

Ru-Yi Translation

Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of power. What are these ten? Namely: the power of a profound mind, because it is never mixed with any worldly sentiment; the power of an ever-deepening mind, because it never abandons any buddha-dharma; the power of skillful means, because whatever it does reaches its ultimate completion; the power of wisdom, because it fully understands the workings of every mind; the power of vows, because it brings everything sought to fulfillment; the power of practice, because it never ceases to the very limit of the future; the power of the vehicle, because it is able to bring forth every vehicle while never abandoning the great vehicle; the power of spiritual transformation, because within each and every pore it manifests every pure world where every tathāgata appears in the world; the power of awakening, because it causes every sentient being to give rise to the mind that becomes a buddha, without any interruption; and the power of turning the wheel of dharma, because a single phrase of dharma it speaks entirely matches every sentient being's own faculties, nature, and desires. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within this dharma, they attain the unsurpassed, all-knowing ten powers of every buddha.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

轉法輪力,說一句法悉稱一切眾生諸根性欲故 — the power of turning the wheel of dharma, because a single phrase of dharma it speaks entirely matches every sentient being's own faculties, nature, and desires. The final power measures its own success not by how much is said but by how precisely a single phrase fits every listener at once, regardless of how different their faculties, natures, and desires might be from one another.
