Unshared Dharma Continues
The fifth unshared dharma pairs ten opposites in a single breath — nirvāṇa and birth-and-death, ultimate cessation and rising affliction, a jeweled body and an ugly, impoverished form — before the sixth through eighth turn to purity of conduct, taking on every being's suffering in their place, and simply never growing tiresome to look upon.
Ten Opposites in a Single Breath
The fifth unshared dharma is built entirely from paired contradictions — abiding in nirvāṇa while manifesting birth and death, accumulating nothing but good while manifesting birth in hell — and closes by declaring this measureless wisdom beyond even a śrāvaka's comprehension. The plainer entries that follow ground this in conduct: purity of body, speech, and mind, taking on every being's suffering directly, and remaining someone no one ever tires of seeing.
佛子！菩薩摩訶薩善知權實雙行道，智慧自在，到於究竟。所謂：住於涅槃而示現生死，知無眾生而勤行教化，究竟寂滅而現起煩惱，住一堅密智慧法身而普現無量諸眾生身，常入深禪定而示受欲樂，常遠離三界而不捨眾生，常樂法樂而現有采女歌詠嬉戲，雖以眾相好莊嚴其身而示受醜陋貧賤之形，常積集眾善無諸過惡而現生地獄、畜生、餓鬼，雖已到於佛智彼岸而亦不捨菩薩智身。菩薩摩訶薩成就如是無量智慧，聲聞、獨覺尚不能知，何況一切童蒙眾生！是為第五不由他教權實雙行不共法。
"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva skillfully knows the path of practicing both skillful means and ultimate truth together, their wisdom sovereignly free, reaching the very end. Namely: abiding in nirvāṇa while manifesting birth and death; knowing that no sentient being exists while diligently carrying out teaching and transformation; having reached ultimate cessation while manifesting the arising of affliction; abiding in a single, firm, and dense dharma-body of wisdom while universally manifesting measureless bodies of sentient beings; constantly entering profound meditative absorption while manifesting the experience of sensual pleasure; forever staying far from the three realms while never abandoning sentient beings; forever delighting in the joy of the dharma while manifesting amid dancing girls, songs, and revelry; though adorning their own body with excellent marks, manifesting an ugly and impoverished form; constantly accumulating every kind of good with no fault at all, while manifesting birth in hell, as an animal, or as a hungry ghost; and though having already reached the far shore of a buddha's own wisdom, never abandoning the wisdom-body of a bodhisattva. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva who accomplishes measureless wisdom such as this is beyond the comprehension even of a śrāvaka or a solitary awakened one — how much more so of any immature sentient being! This is the fifth unshared dharma: practicing skillful means and ultimate truth together without being taught by another.
佛子！菩薩摩訶薩身、口、意業，隨智慧行皆悉清淨。所謂：具足大慈永離殺心，乃至具足正解無有邪見。是為第六不由他教身、口、意業隨智慧行不共法。佛子！菩薩摩訶薩具足大悲，不捨眾生，代一切眾生而受諸苦，所謂：地獄苦、畜生苦、餓鬼苦。為利益故，不生勞倦，唯專度脫一切眾生，未曾耽染五欲境界，常為精勤滅除眾苦。是為第七不由他教常起大悲不共法。佛子！菩薩摩訶薩常為眾生之所樂見，梵王、帝釋、四天王等一切眾生見無厭足。何以故？菩薩摩訶薩久遠世來，行業清淨無有過失，是故眾生見者無厭。是為第八不由他教一切眾生皆悉樂見不共法。
Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva's deeds of body, speech, and mind, following the workings of wisdom, are all entirely pure. Namely: complete in great loving-kindness, forever free of any thought of killing, all the way through to being complete in right understanding, free of any wrong view. This is the sixth unshared dharma: deeds of body, speech, and mind following the workings of wisdom without being taught by another. Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva, complete in great compassion, never abandoning sentient beings, takes on every kind of suffering in place of every sentient being — namely, the suffering of hell, the suffering of animals, and the suffering of hungry ghosts. For the sake of benefiting them, they never grow weary, single-mindedly devoted only to delivering every sentient being, never once indulging in or being tainted by the domain of the five desires, forever diligently working to eliminate every suffering. This is the seventh unshared dharma: constantly giving rise to great compassion without being taught by another. Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva is forever delighted in by sentient beings to look upon, and Brahmā, Śakra, the four heavenly kings, and every other sentient being never grow weary of seeing them. Why is this? Because the bodhisattva-mahāsattva, since ages long past, has carried out deeds that are pure and free of any fault, and for this reason, whoever sees them never grows weary. This is the eighth unshared dharma: being one whom every sentient being delights to see, without being taught by another.
代一切眾生而受諸苦 — takes on every kind of suffering in place of every sentient being. The seventh unshared dharma does not describe compassion as merely wishing beings free of suffering; it states directly that the bodhisattva receives the suffering of hell, of animals, and of hungry ghosts themselves, in the place of the beings who would otherwise bear it.
