Unshared Dharma Concludes, Ten Kinds of Karmic Activity
The ninth unshared dharma offers a rare simile — a jewel called "Pure Adornment" that keeps its color in mud and clarifies the very water around it — before the tenth closes on a bodhisattva who reaches ultimate freedom yet never stops staying close to a good spiritual friend. Ten kinds of karmic activity then follow, each one a specific undertaking matched to its own reason.
A Jewel That Clarifies the Mud Around It
The simile of the jewel "Pure Adornment" does more than protect the bodhisattva's own purity amid mud — it actively clears the turbid water it sits in, giving this ninth unshared dharma an outward effect the others in this list do not claim. Ten kinds of karmic activity then close this chapter's long run of "ten kinds" lists, each activity paired directly with the reason it counts as karmic activity at all.
"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva, adorned with the great vow of all-knowing wisdom, their resolve and delight firm, even while dwelling amid the perilous places of ordinary beings, śrāvakas, or solitary awakened ones, never once loses or regresses from the bright, pure, wondrous jewel that is the mind of all-knowing wisdom. Son of the Buddha! It is like a jewel called 'Pure Adornment' — placed within mud and filth, its light and color never change, and it is able to make even turbid water entirely clear. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva is exactly like this: even while amid the mixed and turbid places of ordinary, foolish beings, they never once lose or damage the pure jewel-mind that seeks all-knowing wisdom, and are able to cause those very unwholesome sentient beings to leave far behind false views, affliction, and defilement, and attain the pure jewel-mind that seeks all-knowing wisdom. This is the ninth unshared dharma: never losing the jewel-mind of all-knowing wisdom amid every perilous place, without being taught by another. Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva accomplishes the wisdom of self-awakened domain, awakening by themselves with no teacher, reaching sovereign freedom at its ultimate far shore, crowned with the stainless silk banner of the dharma upon their head — and yet never once abandons closeness to a good spiritual friend, and forever delights in revering every tathāgata. This is the tenth unshared dharma: attaining the supreme dharma without ever departing from a good spiritual friend or ceasing to revere every buddha, without being taught by another. Son of the Buddha! These are the bodhisattva-mahāsattva's ten kinds of unshared dharma. If bodhisattvas abide within these, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed, vast unshared dharma.
Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of karmic activity. What are these ten? Namely: the karmic activity toward every world, because they are able to adorn and purify every one of them; the karmic activity toward every buddha, because they are able to make offerings to every one of them; the karmic activity toward every bodhisattva, because they plant the same roots of goodness together with them; the karmic activity toward every sentient being, because they are able to teach and transform every one of them; the karmic activity toward every future age, because they gather it in to the very limit of the future; the karmic activity of every spiritual power, because, without ever leaving a single world, they reach every world; the karmic activity of every radiance, because they emit boundless light of every color, and within each and every ray of light there is a lotus-seat, upon which a bodhisattva appears seated cross-legged; the karmic activity of never letting the seed of the three jewels be cut off, because, after every buddha's cessation, they guard and uphold every buddha's dharma; the karmic activity of every transformation, because they teach the dharma throughout every world, transforming every sentient being; and the karmic activity of every empowerment, because, within a single thought, they manifest in accordance with whatever every sentient being's mind desires, causing every vow to be entirely fulfilled. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within this dharma, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed, vast karmic activity.
置泥澇中光色不改,能令濁水悉皆澄淨 — placed within mud and filth, its light and color never change, and it is able to make even turbid water entirely clear. Most similes in this chapter describe a bodhisattva's own quality surviving contact with impurity; this one goes further, having the jewel actively transform the mud around it into clarity, which the text then applies directly to a bodhisattva causing unwholesome beings to leave behind their own defilement.
Part 740 Complete
This completes the ten kinds of unshared dharma and opens the ten kinds of karmic activity, continuing chapter thirty-eight, 離世間品, in fascicle fifty-six. Part 741 opens ten kinds of body, beginning with a body that never comes because it is born in no world at all.
