Great Matters, Ten Kinds of Mind, Ten Kinds of Arising Resolve
Ten great matters follow directly from the protection just described; ten kinds of mind then compare a bodhisattva's mind to the great earth, the ocean, a diamond, an udumbara flower rarely encountered across every kalpa, and empty space itself; and ten kinds of arising resolve close this Part with a series of first-person vows, each beginning "I shall."
Ten Similes for a Single Mind
The ten kinds of mind gather nearly every image this chapter has used elsewhere — the great earth that bears roots of goodness, the ocean that receives every buddha's wisdom, the diamond nothing can move — into one compact list, closing on empty space itself as the final, unmeasurable comparison. The ten kinds of arising resolve that follow shift from simile into direct first-person vow.
"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva, having attained this protection, is then able to accomplish ten great matters. What are these ten? Namely: causing every sentient being to rejoice; being able to go to every world; being able to fully understand every faculty; causing every excellent understanding to become pure; causing every affliction to be removed and cut off; causing every habitual imprint to be abandoned; causing every desire and delight to become bright and clean; causing every profound mind to grow; causing pervasion throughout the whole dharma-realm; and universally causing every nirvāṇa to be clearly seen. These are the ten. Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of mind. What are these ten? Namely: a mind like the great earth, because it is able to bear and able to nurture every sentient being's every root of goodness; a mind like the great ocean, because the measureless, boundless waters of great wisdom-dharma of every buddha all flow into it; a mind like Sumeru, king of mountains, because it places every sentient being within the supreme place of world-transcending roots of goodness; a mind like the king of maṇi jewels, because its desire and delight are pure, free of any mixed defilement; a mind like a diamond, because it definitively and profoundly enters every dharma; a mind like the cakravāḍa mountains of adamant, because no māra or follower of another path is able to move it; a mind like a lotus flower, because no worldly dharma is able to defile it; a mind like an udumbara flower, because it is difficult to encounter throughout every kalpa; a mind like the pure sun, because it breaks apart every obstruction of darkness; and a mind like empty space, because it can never be measured. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within these, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed, great, pure mind.
Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of arising resolve. What are these ten? Namely: giving rise to the resolve: I shall deliver every sentient being; giving rise to the resolve: I shall cause every sentient being to remove and cut off affliction; giving rise to the resolve: I shall cause every sentient being to eliminate every habitual imprint; giving rise to the resolve: I shall cut off and remove every doubt; giving rise to the resolve: I shall eliminate every sentient being's suffering and distress; giving rise to the resolve: I shall eliminate every difficulty of every evil destiny; giving rise to the resolve: I shall revere and accord with every tathāgata; giving rise to the resolve: I shall skillfully study everything every bodhisattva studies; giving rise to the resolve: I shall, at each and every hair-tip throughout every world, manifest every buddha's attainment of right awakening; and giving rise to the resolve: I shall sound the unsurpassed dharma-drum throughout every world, causing every sentient being to attain understanding in accordance with their own faculties and desires. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within these, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed, great mind capable of every task.
如優曇鉢華心,一切劫中難值遇故 — a mind like an udumbara flower, because it is difficult to encounter throughout every kalpa. Set between the diamond that no māra can move and the sun that breaks every darkness, this simile stands out for describing rarity rather than strength — the mind's value here lies not in what it withstands but in how seldom it is ever found at all.
Part 743 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-eight, 離世間品, in fascicle fifty-six. Part 744 opens ten kinds of pervading mind, beginning with a mind that pervades the whole of empty space through the vastness of its own resolve.
