Pervading Mind, Ten Kinds of Faculty, Ten Kinds of Profound Mind

Ten kinds of pervading mind reach into everything from empty space to the six stages of every buddha's own appearance in the world — womb, birth, going forth, awakening, teaching, and parinirvāṇa — all understood within a single thought. Ten kinds of faculty and ten kinds of profound mind then follow, each naming a specific strength or steadiness a bodhisattva relies on.

Six Stages of a Buddha in a Single Thought

The fourth kind of pervading mind names, in a single entry, six specific moments of a buddha's life — entering the womb, being born, going forth from home, attaining the path, turning the wheel of dharma, and entering parinirvāṇa — all understood at once rather than in sequence. The faculties and profound minds that follow move from that comprehensive scope back down to specific, named strengths.

"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of pervading mind. What are these ten? Namely: a mind pervading the whole of empty space, because its resolve is vast; a mind pervading the whole dharma-realm, because it penetrates boundlessly deep; a mind pervading all three times, because it fully knows them within a single thought; a mind pervading the appearance of every buddha, because it clearly understands entering the womb, being born, going forth from home, attaining the path, turning the wheel of dharma, and entering parinirvāṇa; a mind pervading every sentient being, because it fully knows their faculties, desires, and habitual imprints; a mind pervading every wisdom, because it fully understands the dharma-realm in accordance with it; a mind pervading every boundlessness, because it knows the distinctions within every illusory net; a mind pervading everything unborn, because it finds no inherent nature in any dharma; a mind pervading everything unobstructed, because it abides in neither its own mind nor another's mind; and a mind pervading every sovereign freedom, because within a single thought it universally manifests the attainment of buddhahood. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within these, they attain the measureless, unsurpassed, pervading adornment of the buddha-dharma.

Ru-Yi Translation

Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of faculty. What are these ten? Namely: the faculty of joy, because seeing every buddha, their faith is never broken; the faculty of aspiration, because they awaken to and understand every buddha-dharma they hear; the faculty of non-regression, because everything they do reaches its ultimate completion; the faculty of abiding, because they never interrupt any bodhisattva practice; the faculty of subtlety, because they enter the subtle, wondrous principle of the perfection of wisdom; the faculty of never resting, because they bring every matter concerning sentient beings to its ultimate completion; the faculty like a diamond, because they realize and know the nature of every dharma; the faculty of diamond-flame radiance, because it universally illuminates the domain of every buddha; the faculty of no distinction, because every tathāgata shares one and the same body; and the faculty of the unobstructed limit, because it penetrates deeply into the tathāgata's own ten powers. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within these, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed, great, and fully complete faculty of wisdom. Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of profound mind. What are these ten? Namely: a profound mind unstained by any worldly dharma; a profound mind never mixed with the path of either of the two lesser vehicles; a profound mind that fully penetrates every buddha's own awakening; a profound mind according with the path of all-knowing wisdom itself; a profound mind never moved by any māra or follower of another path; a profound mind purely cultivating every tathāgata's own complete wisdom; a profound mind that upholds every dharma it has heard; a profound mind unattached to any place of birth; a profound mind complete in every subtle wisdom; and a profound mind cultivating every buddha-dharma. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within these, they attain the unsurpassed, pure, profound mind of all-knowing wisdom.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

周遍一切佛出現心,於入胎、誕生、出家、成道、轉法輪、般涅槃悉明了故 — a mind pervading the appearance of every buddha, because it clearly understands entering the womb, being born, going forth from home, attaining the path, turning the wheel of dharma, and entering parinirvāṇa. These six stages together form the traditional outline of a buddha's earthly career; naming them as a single unit within one entry treats the whole life, from conception to final cessation, as one thing a pervading mind holds at once.
