Fascicle 57 Begins, Habitual Imprint, Taking Up, Cultivation
Fascicle fifty-seven opens with ten kinds of habitual imprint that a bodhisattva keeps rather than sheds — the mind of awakening, roots of goodness, seeing buddhas — before ten kinds of taking up explain how bodhisattva practice stays unbroken, and ten kinds of cultivation name the specific work involved, from study to turning the true dharma wheel.
An Imprint Worth Keeping
Where affliction leaves habitual imprints a practitioner works to erase, this opening list names ten imprints a bodhisattva deliberately cultivates and keeps — the mind of awakening, roots of goodness, seeing buddhas — before declaring that abiding in them leads not to more imprinting but to a wisdom that knows habitual imprint itself as no imprint at all.
"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of habitual imprint. What are these ten? Namely: the habitual imprint of the mind of awakening; the habitual imprint of roots of goodness; the habitual imprint of teaching and transforming sentient beings; the habitual imprint of seeing buddhas; the habitual imprint of taking birth in pure worlds; the habitual imprint of practice; the habitual imprint of vows; the habitual imprint of the pāramitās; the habitual imprint of reflecting on the dharma of equality; and the habitual imprint of every kind of distinct domain. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within this dharma, they forever depart from every habitual imprint of affliction, and attain the tathāgata's own great wisdom that knows habitual imprint as no habitual imprint at all.
Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of taking up, by which bodhisattva practice is never interrupted. What are these ten? Namely: taking up the whole realm of sentient beings, in order to teach and transform it to its ultimate completion; taking up every world, in order to adorn and purify it to its ultimate completion; taking up the tathāgata, cultivating bodhisattva practice as an offering to them; taking up roots of goodness, in order to accumulate the merit of every buddha's own excellent marks; taking up great compassion, in order to extinguish every sentient being's suffering; taking up great loving-kindness, in order to give every sentient being the joy of all-knowing wisdom; taking up the pāramitās, in order to accumulate every adornment of a bodhisattva; taking up skillful means, in order to manifest everywhere; taking up awakening, in order to attain unobstructed wisdom; and, in brief, a bodhisattva takes up every dharma, manifesting it everywhere with clear wisdom, fully revealed. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within this taking up, they are able never to interrupt bodhisattva practice, and attain every tathāgata's own unsurpassed dharma of taking up nothing at all. Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of cultivation. What are these ten? Namely: cultivating every pāramitā; cultivating study; cultivating wisdom; cultivating meaning; cultivating the dharma; cultivating liberation; cultivating manifestation; cultivating diligent practice without laziness; cultivating the attainment of complete, right awakening; and cultivating the turning of the true dharma wheel. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within these, they attain the unsurpassed cultivation that cultivates every dharma.
得一切如來無上無所取法 — attain every tathāgata's own unsurpassed dharma of taking up nothing at all. The ten kinds of taking up close on their own reversal: sustained taking up of sentient beings, worlds, and awakening is what leads to a dharma described as taking up nothing whatsoever, without the text treating this as a contradiction needing resolution.
