Ten Kinds of Path Free of Birth, Ten Kinds of Definite Dharma

Every one of the ten kinds of path free of birth is built from a paired "while" — bringing forth wisdom while observing every being, transcending the three realms while remaining in every world — closing with the claim that this path transcends the world without ever mixing with the practice of the two lesser vehicles. Ten kinds of definite dharma then follow, each one a specific, unwavering certainty.

Ten Times, the Same "While"

Every entry in the path free of birth follows the identical grammar: one clause names a transcendence, and the second, joined by "while," names the ordinary engagement that transcendence never displaces — free of affliction while dwelling with every being, delighting in stillness while manifesting amid every retinue. Nothing on this list is achieved by leaving anything behind.

"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of path free of birth. What are these ten? Namely: bringing forth the perfection of wisdom while forever observing every sentient being — this is the first; staying far from every view while delivering every sentient being bound by views — this is the second; never dwelling on any mark while never abandoning any sentient being attached to marks — this is the third; transcending the three realms while forever remaining within every world — this is the fourth; forever free of affliction while dwelling together with every sentient being — this is the fifth; attaining the dharma free of desire while forever, with great compassion, having pity on every sentient being attached to desire — this is the sixth; forever delighting in stillness while constantly manifesting amid every kind of retinue — this is the seventh; free of birth in the world while dying here and being born there to carry out bodhisattva practice — this is the eighth; unstained by any worldly dharma while never interrupting any worldly task — this is the ninth; and every buddha's own awakening already manifest before them while never abandoning any bodhisattva vow or practice — this is the tenth. Son of the Buddha! These are the bodhisattva-mahāsattva's ten kinds of path free of birth, transcending the world, not shared with the world, and yet never mixed with the practice of the two lesser vehicles. If bodhisattvas abide within this dharma, they attain a bodhisattva's own definite dharma.

Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of definite dharma. What are these ten? Namely: definitely being born within the tathāgata's own lineage; definitely abiding within the domain of every buddha; definitely and fully understanding everything a bodhisattva does; definitely abiding in every pāramitā; definitely being admitted into every assembly of the tathāgata; definitely being able to reveal the tathāgata's own lineage-nature; definitely abiding in the tathāgata's own power; definitely penetrating deeply into the buddha's own awakening; definitely sharing one and the same body with every tathāgata; and definitely abiding, without any difference, in the very same place every tathāgata abides. These are the ten.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

離世間生而死此生彼起菩薩行 — free of birth in the world while dying here and being born there to carry out bodhisattva practice. Even freedom from birth is stated through the very fact of dying and being born again; the eighth entry does not exempt a bodhisattva from the cycle of birth and death, it simply names carrying out bodhisattva practice as the reason that cycle continues.
