Ten Kinds of Bodhisattva Path Begin

This list is built on a striking design: rather than naming ten unrelated paths, it counts upward from one to ten, folding in the tradition's own classic numbered groupings — the single mind of awakening, the two provisions of wisdom and skillful means, the six superknowledges, the seven recollections — and declaring the entire sequence, one through ten, to be a single bodhisattva path.

Counting From One to Seven

Each numbered grouping here is drawn from elsewhere in Buddhist teaching — the six superknowledges, the seven recollections — but the list treats the count itself as meaningful, presenting the single path, the two paths, and onward as one continuous ascent rather than ten separate lists placed side by side.

"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of path. What are these ten? Namely: the single path is a bodhisattva's path, because it never abandons the sole mind of awakening. The two paths are a bodhisattva's path, because they bring forth wisdom and skillful means. The three paths are a bodhisattva's path, because they practice emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, unattached to the three realms. The four practices are a bodhisattva's path, because they repent and remove obstructions of wrongdoing, rejoice in merit, revere and respectfully entreat the tathāgata, and skillfully dedicate all of this without ever resting. The five faculties are a bodhisattva's path, because they abide in pure faith, firm and unmoving; arouse great diligence, bringing everything they do to completion; keep right mindfulness single-mindedly, with no other object of attention; skillfully know the means of entering and emerging from samādhi; and are able to discern the domain of wisdom. The six superknowledges are a bodhisattva's path. Namely: the divine eye, because it sees every form throughout every world, knowing how sentient beings die here and are born there; the divine ear, because it hears every buddha's teaching, upholds and remembers it, and expounds it widely for sentient beings according to their own faculties; the wisdom that knows others' minds, because it knows another's mind with sovereign, unobstructed freedom; the recollection of past lives, because it remembers every kalpa of the past, causing roots of goodness to grow; the spiritual power of unimpeded movement, because it manifests in every kind of way for whichever sentient being is to be transformed, causing them to delight in the dharma; and the wisdom of the extinction of outflows, because it directly realizes ultimate reality, giving rise to bodhisattva practice without ever interrupting it.

The seven recollections are a bodhisattva's path. Namely: recollecting the buddha, because they see measureless buddhas within a single pore, awakening the minds of every sentient being; recollecting the dharma, because, without ever leaving a single tathāgata's assembly, they personally receive the wondrous dharma within every tathāgata's assembly, expounding it in accordance with every sentient being's own faculties, nature, and delight, causing them to awaken and enter it; recollecting the saṃgha, because they see it continuously without ever resting, seeing bodhisattvas throughout every world; recollecting generosity, because they fully understand every bodhisattva's practice of giving, causing a vast mind of giving to grow; recollecting the precepts, because they never abandon the mind of awakening, dedicating every root of goodness to sentient beings; recollecting the heavens, because they constantly recollect the bodhisattva bound for one more birth who dwells in the palace of Tuṣita heaven; and recollecting sentient beings, because they teach and tame them with wisdom and skillful means, extending this universally to all without any interruption.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

一道是菩薩道,不捨獨一菩提心故 — the single path is a bodhisattva's path, because it never abandons the sole mind of awakening. Beginning the entire ascending sequence at "one" rather than at some more elaborate first item sets the tone for the whole list: everything that follows, all the way to ten, is presented as an extension of this same single, unabandoned mind.
