Ten Kinds of Weapon, Ten Kinds of Head
Ten kinds of weapon range from the expected — wisdom, right livelihood — to the startling: greed, hatred, and delusion themselves named as a bodhisattva's own weapon, delivering beings through the very gate of affliction, and birth and death itself wielded as a tool for teaching. Ten kinds of head follow, opening with a crown so exalted that no one is able to see its top.
Affliction Itself as a Weapon
The seventh weapon on this list does something none of the others attempt: rather than opposing affliction with a virtue, it names greed, hatred, delusion, and every affliction directly as the bodhisattva's own weapon, delivering sentient beings through that very gate rather than around it — and the eighth extends the same logic to birth and death itself.
"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of weapon. What are these ten? Namely: giving is a bodhisattva's weapon, because it destroys every stinginess; upholding precepts is a bodhisattva's weapon, because it casts aside every violation; equality is a bodhisattva's weapon, because it cuts off every discrimination; wisdom is a bodhisattva's weapon, because it extinguishes every affliction; right livelihood is a bodhisattva's weapon, because it stays far from every wrong livelihood; skillful means is a bodhisattva's weapon, because it manifests everywhere; in brief, greed, hatred, delusion, and every other affliction are a bodhisattva's weapon, because it delivers sentient beings through the very gate of affliction; birth and death are a bodhisattva's weapon, because it never interrupts bodhisattva practice in teaching and transforming sentient beings; teaching the dharma exactly as it truly is is a bodhisattva's weapon, because it is able to break every attachment; and all-knowing wisdom is a bodhisattva's weapon, because it never abandons the gate of bodhisattva practice. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within this dharma, they are able to eliminate every affliction and fetter that sentient beings have accumulated throughout the long night.
Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of head. What are these ten? Namely: the head of nirvāṇa, because no one is able to see its crown; the head of reverence, because every human and deva bows to it in respect; the head of vast, excellent understanding, because it is the most excellent throughout the great trichiliocosm; the head of foremost roots of goodness, because every sentient being throughout the three realms makes offerings to it; the head that carries sentient beings, because it accomplishes the fleshy protuberance upon the crown; the head that never disparages others, because it is forever excellent and honored everywhere; the head of the perfection of wisdom, because it nurtures every dharma of merit; the head in accord with the wisdom of skillful means, because it universally manifests bodies of every kind; the head that teaches and transforms every sentient being, because it takes every sentient being as its own disciple; and the head that guards every buddha's own dharma-eye, because it is able to keep the seed of the three jewels from ever being cut off. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within this dharma, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed head of great wisdom.
略說貪、瞋、癡等一切煩惱是菩薩器仗,以煩惱門度眾生故 — in brief, greed, hatred, delusion, and every other affliction are a bodhisattva's weapon, because it delivers sentient beings through the very gate of affliction. Where the surrounding entries oppose affliction with something contrary to it, this one repurposes affliction directly as the tool of delivery, treating the very gate through which beings suffer as the gate through which they are also reached.
