Ten Kinds of Eyes, Ten Kinds of Ears

The ten kinds of eyes take the tradition's well-known set of five — physical, divine, wisdom, dharma, and buddha — and double it to ten, adding sight of a buddha's own light, of nirvāṇa itself, and of the universal gate of the dharma-realm. Ten kinds of ears follow, each responding to a different kind of sound with an identical, unwavering equanimity.

Praise and Blame, Answered the Same Way

The first two kinds of ears form a matched pair: hearing praise cuts off craving, and hearing disparagement cuts off hatred, treating both as equally in need of the same remedy rather than one as welcome and the other as merely endured. The ears that follow extend this same evenness to hearing of hell, of heaven, and of every sound throughout the ten directions, known as nothing more than an echo.

"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of eyes. Namely: the physical eye, because it sees every form; the divine eye, because it sees every sentient being's own mind; the wisdom eye, because it sees the domain of every sentient being's own faculties; the dharma eye, because it sees the true mark of every dharma exactly as it is; the buddha eye, because it sees the tathāgata's own ten powers; the wisdom-knowing eye, because it knows and sees every dharma; the eye of light, because it sees a buddha's own light; the eye that transcends birth and death, because it sees nirvāṇa; the unobstructed eye, because whatever it sees has no obstruction; and the eye of all-knowing wisdom, because it sees the universal gate of the dharma-realm. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within this dharma, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed eye of great wisdom.

Ru-Yi Translation

Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of ears. What are these ten? Namely: hearing the sound of praise, they cut off and remove craving and attachment; hearing the sound of disparagement, they cut off and remove hatred and anger; hearing the two lesser vehicles spoken of, they are neither attached to nor seeking them; hearing the bodhisattva path spoken of, they rejoice and exult; hearing of hell and every other place of suffering and difficulty, they give rise to a mind of great compassion, arousing a vast vow; hearing of the excellent, wondrous affairs of humans and devas spoken of, they know all of these are impermanent dharmas; hearing the merits of every buddha praised, they diligently add effort, causing them to be swiftly perfected; hearing the six pāramitās, the four means of attraction, and other such dharmas spoken of, they give rise to the resolve to cultivate them, vowing to reach the far shore; hearing every sound throughout the worlds of the ten directions, they fully know it to be exactly like an echo, entering the unspeakably profound and wondrous meaning; and a bodhisattva-mahāsattva, from their very first arousing of the mind of awakening all the way to the site of awakening, constantly hears the true dharma without ever once resting, and forever never abandons the task of transforming sentient beings. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas accomplish this dharma, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed ear of great wisdom.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

聞讚歎聲,斷除貪愛;聞毀呰聲,斷除瞋恚 — hearing the sound of praise, they cut off and remove craving and attachment; hearing the sound of disparagement, they cut off and remove hatred and anger. Placed first among the ten ears, this pair sets the pattern for the whole list: sound is never treated as good or bad news requiring a matched emotional response, only as an occasion for removing whatever reaction it might otherwise provoke.
