Ten Kinds of Sitting, Ten Kinds of Lying Down

Ten kinds of sitting borrow their images from royal and divine authority — a wheel-turning king, the four heavenly kings, Śakra, Brahmā — before closing on the diamond seat that subdues every māra. Ten kinds of lying down then treat what looks like simple rest as ten distinct accomplishments, each with its own specific reason.

Even Rest Has Ten Reasons

Where sitting is described through images of rulership and authority, lying down turns to something far more ordinary — and treats it with exactly the same structural care, naming ten distinct kinds of rest, each earned by its own specific accomplishment, down to a final entry describing rest achieved simply because every effort has already become habitual.

"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of sitting. What are these ten? Namely: the seat of a wheel-turning king, because it establishes the ten wholesome paths of action; the seat of the four heavenly kings, because it sovereignly establishes the buddha-dharma throughout every world; the seat of Śakra, because it becomes an excellent lord to every sentient being; the seat of Brahmā, because it attains sovereign freedom over its own mind and the minds of others; the lion's seat, because it is able to teach the dharma; the seat of the true dharma, because it reveals it through the power of dhāraṇī and eloquence; the firm seat, because its vow reaches its ultimate completion; the seat of great loving-kindness, because it causes every evil sentient being to rejoice; the seat of great compassion, because it endures every suffering without ever growing weary; and the diamond seat, because it subdues every māra and every follower of another path. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within this dharma, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed seat of right awakening.

Ru-Yi Translation

Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of lying down. What are these ten? Namely: lying down in stillness, because body and mind are calm and untroubled; lying down in meditative absorption, because it practices in accordance with principle; lying down in samādhi, because body and mind are gentle and pliant; lying down like Brahmā, because it troubles neither itself nor others; lying down in wholesome karma, because there is never regret afterward; lying down in right faith, because it can never be tipped over or moved; lying down on the right path, because good friends awaken it; lying down in a wondrous vow, because it skillfully dedicates it; lying down with every matter finished, because everything it does has been accomplished; and lying down having set aside every effort, because it is entirely habituated to all of it. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within this dharma, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed, great lying down in dharma, able to fully awaken every sentient being.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

捨諸功用臥,一切慣習故 — lying down having set aside every effort, because it is entirely habituated to all of it. The tenth and final lying-down closes the list on a quiet paradox: effortlessness here is not the absence of practice but its endpoint, arrived at only once every one of the preceding nine kinds of rest has become second nature.

Part 765 Complete

This continues chapter thirty-eight, 離世間品, in fascicle fifty-seven. Part 766 opens ten kinds of dwelling place, beginning with great loving-kindness as the place a bodhisattva abides in, because its mind is equal toward every sentient being.
