Ten Kinds of Observation, Ten Kinds of Universal Observation
Ten kinds of observation move from every karmic deed seen down to its most subtle detail through to the consecrated ground where a bodhisattva stands unmoving within every buddha-dharma. Ten kinds of universal observation then follow, each one meeting a specific kind of sentient being — the lazy, the harmful, the doubting — with the exact remedy their own condition calls for.
A Remedy Matched to Each Condition
The ten kinds of universal observation each name a specific kind of sentient being and pair it with an exact response: those who violate precepts are placed within the tathāgata's own pure precepts, those with a mind of harm are placed within the power of patience, and the lazy are urged toward diligence rather than simply observed from a distance.
"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of observation. What are these ten? Namely: the observation of knowing every karmic deed, because it sees even the most subtle detail in full; the observation of knowing every destiny, because it takes hold of no sentient being; the observation of knowing every faculty, because it fully understands that there is no fixed faculty at all; the observation of knowing every dharma, because it never damages the dharma-realm; the observation of seeing the buddha-dharma, because it diligently cultivates the buddha eye; the observation of attaining wisdom, because it teaches the dharma in accordance with principle; the observation of the acceptance of non-arising, because it definitively understands the buddha-dharma; the observation of the never-regressing ground, because it extinguishes every affliction, transcending the three realms and the ground of the two lesser vehicles; the observation of the consecrated ground, because it is sovereignly free and unmoving within every buddha-dharma; and the observation of the samādhi of skillfully awakened wisdom, because it carries out the work of a buddha throughout every one of the ten directions. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within this dharma, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed, great wisdom of observation.
Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of universal observation. What are these ten? Namely: universally observing every one who comes seeking, satisfying their wish with a mind that never refuses; universally observing every sentient being who violates the precepts, placing them within the tathāgata's own pure precepts; universally observing every sentient being with a mind of harm, placing them within the tathāgata's own power of patience; universally observing every lazy sentient being, urging them toward diligence, never abandoning the burden of the great vehicle; universally observing every sentient being with a disturbed mind, causing them to abide, unscattered, in the tathāgata's own ground of all-knowing wisdom; universally observing every sentient being of unwholesome understanding, causing them to remove doubt and break the view of existence; universally observing every equal, good friend, according with their teaching and command, abiding in the buddha-dharma; universally observing every dharma heard, swiftly attaining realization and vision of the supreme meaning; universally observing every boundless sentient being, forever never abandoning the power of great compassion; and universally observing the dharma of every buddha, swiftly accomplishing all-knowing wisdom. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within this dharma, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed, great wisdom of universal observation.
普觀一切懈怠眾生,勸令精勤不捨荷負大乘擔故 — universally observing every lazy sentient being, urging them toward diligence, never abandoning the burden of the great vehicle. Most entries in this list pair observation with a matched inner state — patience for harm, precepts for violation — but this one moves directly into active urging, treating observation of laziness as incomplete without the direct exhortation that follows it.
