Ten Kinds of Pure Patience, Ten Kinds of Pure Diligence
Ten kinds of pure patience move from enduring insult and physical harm to a final entry that departs from endurance altogether: an acceptance of every dharma's unborn nature, arrived at without being taught by another. Ten kinds of pure diligence follow, closing on a diligence so complete it manifests every deed of Samantabhadra — birth, going forth, awakening, teaching, and cessation — through a single outflow-free body.
From Endurance to Understanding
The first nine kinds of pure patience all describe enduring something — insult, blade and staff, mutilation, wrong done without retaliation. The tenth breaks this pattern entirely, moving from endurance to direct understanding: an acceptance of the unborn nature of every dharma, reached without any teacher, closing the list on insight rather than forbearance.
"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of pure patience. What are these ten? Namely: the pure patience of calmly enduring insult and disgrace, because it protects every sentient being; the pure patience of calmly enduring blade and staff, because it skillfully protects both self and other; the pure patience of never giving rise to hatred and harm, because the mind is unmoving; the pure patience of never reproaching the lowly, because being superior, it is able to be magnanimous; the pure patience of rescuing every one who takes refuge, because it gives up its own body and life; the pure patience of staying far from pride, because it never looks down on those who have not yet learned; the pure patience of never being angered even by mutilation, because it observes it as exactly like an illusion; the pure patience of never retaliating even when wronged, because it perceives neither self nor other; the pure patience of never following affliction, because it stays free of every domain; and the pure patience according with a bodhisattva's own true wisdom that knows every dharma as unborn, because, without being taught by another, it enters the domain of all-knowing wisdom. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within these, they attain every buddha's own unsurpassed acceptance of the dharma, awakened without being taught by another.
Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of pure diligence. What are these ten? Namely: the pure diligence of the body, because it attends upon and makes offerings to every buddha, bodhisattva, and teacher, revering this field of merit without ever regressing; the pure diligence of speech, because it widely teaches others whatever dharma it has heard, praising the buddha's own merit without ever growing weary; the pure diligence of the mind, because it is able to enter and emerge from loving-kindness, compassion, joy, equanimity, meditative absorption, liberation, and every samādhi without ever resting; the pure diligence of an upright mind, because, free of deceit and flattery, free of crookedness and falseness, it diligently cultivates everything without ever regressing; the pure diligence of an ever-heightening mind, because its resolve constantly seeks higher and higher wisdom, vowing to be complete in every pure, wholesome dharma; the pure diligence that is never wasted, because it gathers in giving, precepts, patience, extensive learning, and heedfulness, never once pausing all the way to awakening; the pure diligence that subdues every māra, because it is able to eliminate greed, hatred, delusion, wrong view, and every affliction, entanglement, and hindrance; the pure diligence that fulfills the light of wisdom, because whatever it undertakes it skillfully observes, bringing everything to its ultimate completion without ever regretting it, attaining every buddha's own unshared dharma; the pure diligence of neither coming nor going, because it attains wisdom exactly as things truly are, enters the gate of the dharma-realm, and its body, speech, and mind are all entirely equal, understanding mark as no mark, attached to nothing; and the pure diligence that accomplishes the light of dharma, because, transcending every ground, receiving the buddha's own consecration, it manifests, through an outflow-free body, passing away and being born, going forth from home, attaining the path, teaching the dharma, and entering cessation, being complete in every one of these deeds of Samantabhadra. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within this dharma, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed, great, pure diligence.
以無漏身而示歿生、出家、成道、說法、滅度,具足如是普賢事故 — through an outflow-free body, passing away and being born, going forth from home, attaining the path, teaching the dharma, and entering cessation, being complete in every one of these deeds of Samantabhadra. The tenth diligence names, as its own accomplishment, the full traditional life-cycle of a buddha's appearance in the world — every stage from birth to final cessation folded into a single body already free of every outflow.
Part 771 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-eight, 離世間品, in fascicle fifty-eight. Part 772 opens ten kinds of pure meditative absorption, beginning with constantly delighting in going forth from home because everything possessed has been given up.
