Pure Meditative Absorption, Pure Wisdom, Six Pāramitās Complete
Ten kinds of pure meditative absorption move from going forth from home to a final entry of sovereign, playful ease entered through knowing there is no self. Ten kinds of pure wisdom then close this six-part sequence, which purified giving, precepts, patience, diligence, meditative absorption, and now wisdom in turn — each pāramitā given its own set of ten refinements.
A Wisdom Beyond Every Adversary
The seventh kind of pure wisdom stands apart from the others by naming exactly who cannot reach it — no māra, no follower of another path, no śrāvaka, no solitary awakened one — defining this wisdom's purity not by what it contains but by whose comprehension it categorically exceeds, because it penetrates deeply into every tathāgata's own wisdom alone.
"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of pure meditative absorption. What are these ten? Namely: the pure absorption of constantly delighting in going forth from home, because it gives up everything it possesses; the pure absorption of attaining a true, good friend, because it reveals and teaches the right path; the pure absorption of dwelling in the forest hermitage, enduring wind and rain and the like, because it is free of self and what belongs to self; the pure absorption of staying far from noisy, crowded sentient beings, because it forever delights in stillness; the pure absorption of a mind and its deeds gentle and pliant, because it guards every faculty; the pure absorption of a mind and wisdom at cessation, because no sound and no thorn of any meditative absorption is able to disturb it; the pure absorption of the skillful means of the path of awakening, because it observes everything as directly realized; the pure absorption free of savoring attachment, because it never abandons the realm of desire; the pure absorption that gives rise to spiritual penetration and clarity, because it knows every sentient being's own faculty and nature; and the pure absorption of sovereign, playful ease, because it enters a buddha's own samādhi, knowing there is no self. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within these, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed, great, pure meditative absorption.
Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of pure wisdom. What are these ten? Namely: the pure wisdom of knowing every cause, because it never damages the resulting fruit; the pure wisdom of knowing every condition, because it never contradicts their coming together; the pure wisdom of knowing neither annihilation nor permanence, because it fully understands dependent origination exactly as it truly is; the pure wisdom that uproots every view, because it neither grasps nor rejects the mark of any sentient being; the pure wisdom of observing every sentient being's own mental conduct, because it fully understands it as exactly like an illusion; the pure wisdom of vast eloquence, because it discerns every dharma and answers every question without any obstruction; the pure wisdom that no māra, follower of another path, śrāvaka, or solitary awakened one is able to know, because it penetrates deeply into every tathāgata's own wisdom; the pure wisdom of seeing every buddha's own subtle and wondrous dharma-body, seeing that every sentient being's own root nature is pure, seeing that every dharma is entirely still and extinguished, and seeing that every land is exactly the same as empty space, because it knows that every mark is entirely unobstructed; the pure wisdom of every dhāraṇī, eloquence, and skillful-means pāramitā, because it causes the attainment of every most excellent wisdom; and the pure wisdom of diamond wisdom in accord with a single thought, fully understanding the equality of every dharma, because it attains the most revered wisdom of every dharma. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within these, they attain the tathāgata's own unobstructed, great wisdom.
一切諸魔、外道、聲聞、獨覺所不能知清淨慧,深入一切如來智故 — the pure wisdom that no māra, follower of another path, śrāvaka, or solitary awakened one is able to know, because it penetrates deeply into every tathāgata's own wisdom. This entry closes the entire six-part purification sequence — giving, precepts, patience, diligence, meditative absorption, and now wisdom — on a wisdom defined by its exclusivity: reserved for the tathāgata's own domain alone, beyond even the reach of solitary awakened ones.
