Ten Kinds of Pure Loving-Kindness, Ten Kinds of Pure Compassion

A new sequence opens, purifying the four immeasurables one by one. Ten kinds of pure loving-kindness move from an equal mind toward every being to a final entry conditioned on nothing at all; ten kinds of pure compassion follow, closing on two named, expanded entries — compassion called "original purity" and compassion called "true wisdom" — each with its own distinct reasoning.

A Bird's Trace Through Empty Space

The tenth kind of pure compassion is named "true wisdom" and grounds itself in an image rather than an argument: every dharma is exactly like the trace a bird leaves flying through empty space — real in the moment of flight, yet leaving nothing behind for sentient beings, obscured by delusion, to ever perceive — and compassion arises precisely from observing this vanishing.

"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of pure loving-kindness. What are these ten? Namely: the pure loving-kindness of an equal mind, because it universally gathers in sentient beings without any discrimination; the pure loving-kindness of benefiting others, because whatever it does causes them to rejoice; the pure loving-kindness of treating others as oneself, because it ultimately delivers them all from birth and death; the pure loving-kindness of never abandoning the world, because its mind constantly reflects on and accumulates roots of goodness; the pure loving-kindness able to reach liberation, because it universally causes sentient beings to eliminate every affliction; the pure loving-kindness that gives rise to awakening, because it universally causes sentient beings to give rise to the mind that seeks all-knowing wisdom; the pure loving-kindness unobstructed throughout the world, because it emits a great light that shines equally and universally; the pure loving-kindness that fills all of empty space, because it rescues and protects sentient beings, reaching everywhere without exception; the pure loving-kindness conditioned on the dharma, because it realizes the true dharma of suchness; and the pure loving-kindness conditioned on nothing at all, because it enters a bodhisattva's own nature free of birth. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within this dharma, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed, vast, pure loving-kindness.

Ru-Yi Translation

Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of pure compassion. What are these ten? Namely: the pure compassion without companion, because it gives rise to this mind alone. The pure compassion free of weariness, because it takes on every sentient being's suffering in their place without regarding it as toil. The pure compassion of taking birth in perilous places, because it is for the sake of delivering sentient beings. The pure compassion of taking birth in fortunate destinies, because it manifests impermanence. The pure compassion for sentient beings of fixed wrong destiny, because it never abandons its vast vow throughout every kalpa. The pure compassion unattached to its own pleasure, because it universally gives happiness to sentient beings. The pure compassion that seeks no repayment of kindness, because it cultivates and purifies its own mind. The pure compassion able to remove distorted views, because it teaches the dharma exactly as it truly is. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva, knowing that every dharma is originally pure in nature, free of defilement and free of feverish affliction, and that it is only because of incidental, adventitious afflictions that beings undergo every suffering — knowing this, gives rise to great compassion for every sentient being, named "original purity," in order to teach the stainless, pure, and radiant dharma. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva, knowing that every dharma is exactly like the trace of a bird's flight through empty space, which sentient beings, obscured by the film of delusion, are unable to perceive clearly — observing this, gives rise to a mind of great compassion, named "true wisdom," in order to reveal to them the dharma of nirvāṇa. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within this dharma, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed, vast, pure compassion.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

知一切法如空中鳥迹,眾生癡翳不能照了 — knowing that every dharma is exactly like the trace of a bird's flight through empty space, which sentient beings, obscured by the film of delusion, are unable to perceive clearly. Unlike the eight preceding entries, each anchored in a specific act or attitude, this compassion is grounded purely in a way of seeing — the same emptiness of every dharma that a bodhisattva perceives clearly is, for beings clouded by delusion, entirely invisible, and it is this gap in perception, not any particular suffering, that gives rise to compassion here.
