Ten Kinds of Meaning, Ten Kinds of Dharma

Ten kinds of meaning range from extensive learning grounded in firm practice to great parinirvāṇa itself, defined here not as an end to practice but as extinguishing suffering while still cultivating every bodhisattva deed. Ten kinds of dharma follow, closing on relinquishing every substratum of rebirth in nirvāṇa while continuing, without interruption, to give rise to bodhisattva practice.

Nirvāṇa That Never Stops Practicing

Both lists here converge on the same refusal: the tenth kind of meaning defines great parinirvāṇa as extinguishing suffering while still cultivating bodhisattva practice, and the tenth kind of dharma closes on relinquishing every substratum of rebirth in nirvāṇa while continuing to give rise to that very practice without interruption — neither treats nirvāṇa as a stopping point.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of meaning. What are these ten? Namely: the meaning of extensive learning, because its practice is firm; the meaning of the dharma, because it skillfully reflects and discerns; the meaning of emptiness, because it is the emptiness of ultimate meaning; the meaning of stillness, because it is free of every sentient being's noise and disturbance; the meaning of the unspeakable, because it is unattached to any language at all; the meaning of things as they truly are, because it fully understands the equality of the three times; the meaning of the dharma-realm, because every dharma shares a single flavor; the meaning of suchness, because every tathāgata enters it in accord; the meaning of ultimate reality, because it fully understands the ultimate exactly as it is; and the meaning of great parinirvāṇa, because it extinguishes every suffering while cultivating every bodhisattva practice. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within this dharma, they attain the unsurpassed meaning of all-knowing wisdom.

Ru-Yi Translation

Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of dharma. What are these ten? Namely: the true dharma, because it practices exactly as it is spoken; the dharma free of grasping, because it is entirely free of both a grasper and what is grasped; the dharma of non-contention, because it has no confusion or contention of any kind; the dharma of cessation, because it extinguishes and removes every feverish affliction; the dharma free of desire, because every craving and desire is entirely cut off; the dharma free of discrimination, because every clinging discrimination is forever put to rest; the dharma of non-arising, because it is exactly like empty space, unmoving; the unconditioned dharma, because it is free of every mark of arising, abiding, and ceasing; the dharma of original nature, because its own nature is undefiled and pure; and the dharma of relinquishing every upadhi in nirvāṇa, because it is able to give rise to every bodhisattva practice, cultivating it without interruption. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within these, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed, vast dharma.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

捨一切烏波提涅槃法,能生一切菩薩行,修習不斷故 — the dharma of relinquishing every upadhi in nirvāṇa, because it is able to give rise to every bodhisattva practice, cultivating it without interruption. Upadhi names the substratum or basis that carries a being onward into further rebirth; relinquishing every such basis would ordinarily mean the end of any further activity, yet this entry pairs that relinquishment directly with practice continuing without interruption.
