Ten Kinds of Wisdom as Supporting Equipment Begin
A new list opens, describing ten kinds of wisdom as supporting equipment for the path. The first five move from drawing close to a learned, true, good friend, through mindfulness and delight in the dharma, to a mind that shoulders the six pāramitās and has already brought the four immeasurables to maturity.
A Vessel Fit for the Buddha-Dharma
The second entry names its purpose directly: leaving behind arrogance and coarseness in body, speech, and mind is what makes the body itself fit to be a vessel for the buddha-dharma. The entries that follow build on that same readiness — mindfulness never scattered, delight in the dharma never wearied, and a mind already shouldering the six pāramitās and matured in the four immeasurables.
"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of wisdom as supporting equipment for the path. What are these ten? Namely: drawing close to a learned, true, good friend, revering and making offerings to them, honoring and prostrating before them, according with them in every way, never violating their teaching — this is the first, because it is entirely upright and free of any pretense. Forever leaving behind arrogance and conceit, constantly practicing humility and reverence, the deeds of body, speech, and mind free of any coarseness, gentle and compliant, neither false nor crooked — this is the second, because the body thereby becomes fit to be a vessel for the buddha-dharma. Mindfulness and wisdom following awareness never once scattered, a sense of shame and conscientiousness gentle and composed, the mind settled and unmoving, constantly recollecting the six recollections, constantly practicing the six reverences, constantly according with and abiding in the six firm dharmas — this is the third, because it serves as skillful means for the ten kinds of wisdom.
Delighting in the dharma, delighting in its meaning, taking the dharma itself as joy, constantly delighting in hearing it without ever growing weary, giving up worldly debate and worldly discourse, single-mindedly listening to and receiving world-transcending speech, staying far from the lesser vehicle and entering the wisdom of the great vehicle — this is the fourth, because the mind recollects single-mindedly without any scattering. The mind single-mindedly shouldering the six pāramitās, the practice of the four immeasurables already brought to maturity, according with the illuminating dharma and practicing it thoroughly and well, constantly and diligently questioning the intelligent and wise, staying far from the evil destinies and turning toward the good path, the mind constantly delighting, rightly mindful in observation, taming one's own feelings, guarding the intentions of others — this is the fifth, because it firmly cultivates true and genuine practice.
其身堪作佛法器故 — because the body thereby becomes fit to be a vessel for the buddha-dharma. The second entry gives an unusually concrete reason for shedding arrogance and coarseness: not merely virtue for its own sake, but a kind of physical readiness, the body itself made into a container capable of holding the dharma.
Part 777 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-eight, 離世間品, in fascicle fifty-eight. Part 778 completes the ten kinds of wisdom as supporting equipment for the path, moving through observing the five aggregates as illusion to seeing the dharma-realm's own purity.
