Ten Kinds of Light-Sufficiency, Ten Kinds of Seeking the Dharma
Ten kinds of light-sufficiency move from skillfully discerning every dharma to the classical powers of the divine eye, recollection of past lives, and extinction of outflows. Ten kinds of seeking the dharma follow, moving from an upright mind free of flattery to a final entry seeking only to fulfill the buddha-dharma, with no delight in any other vehicle.
Not for Fame, but to Cut Off Suffering
Both lists here define their own purpose by explicit contrast: the fourth kind of seeking the dharma is undertaken to cut off every sentient being's affliction, not for fame, profit, or reverence, and the sixth seeks wisdom itself while taking no delight in mere words — each entry naming not only what is sought but what it is emphatically not sought for.
"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of light-sufficiency. What are these ten? Namely: the light-sufficiency of skillfully discerning every dharma; the light-sufficiency of not grasping at or attaching to any dharma; the light-sufficiency of leaving behind every inverted view; the light-sufficiency of wisdom's light illuminating every faculty; the light-sufficiency of skillfully arousing right diligence; the light-sufficiency of the wisdom able to penetrate deeply into the truth; the light-sufficiency of extinguishing afflictions and karma, accomplishing the wisdom of exhaustion and the wisdom of non-arising; the light-sufficiency of the wisdom of the divine eye universally observing; the light-sufficiency of the recollection of past lives knowing the purity of the prior limit; and the light-sufficiency of the spiritual wisdom of the extinction of outflows cutting off every outflow of sentient beings. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within this dharma, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed, great light within every buddha-dharma.
Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of seeking the dharma. What are these ten? Namely: seeking the dharma with an upright mind, because it is free of flattery and deceit; seeking the dharma with diligence, because it stays far from laziness and conceit; seeking the dharma single-mindedly, because it does not spare body or life; seeking the dharma in order to cut off every sentient being's affliction, not for the sake of fame, profit, or reverence; seeking the dharma to benefit oneself and every other sentient being, not for one's own benefit alone; seeking the dharma in order to enter wisdom, taking no delight in mere words; seeking the dharma in order to escape birth-and-death, not craving any worldly pleasure; seeking the dharma in order to deliver sentient beings, giving rise to the mind of awakening; seeking the dharma in order to cut off every sentient being's doubt, so that none remains hesitant; and seeking the dharma in order to fulfill the buddha-dharma, taking no delight in any other vehicle. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within this dharma, they attain the great wisdom of every buddha-dharma without needing to be taught by another.
則得不由他教一切佛法大智慧 — they attain the great wisdom of every buddha-dharma without needing to be taught by another. The tenth kind of seeking the dharma, fulfilling the buddha-dharma itself rather than settling for any lesser vehicle, is what the closing line ties directly to a wisdom that no longer depends on instruction from outside.
