The Ten Abodes Complete, Prince and Consecration

The final two abodes complete the image of royal succession first named back at the fourth abode, Noble Birth. The Abode of the Dharma-Prince masters ten kinds of skillful knowledge and enters directly into the Dharma-king's own domain — its palace, its rules, its fearlessness. The Abode of Consecration then reaches a wisdom so vast that not even a Dharma-prince bodhisattva can fully fathom it, completing the full sequence of ten abodes.

The Ninth Abode: The Dharma-Prince

This bodhisattva skillfully knows the arising of birth, affliction, and habitual tendency, and how to proclaim both worldly and ultimate truth — deepened further by entering ten aspects of the Dharma-king's own domain: its palace, its rules, its consecration, its fearlessness, even its repose.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Son of the Buddha! What is meant by the bodhisattva's Abode of the Dharma-Prince? This bodhisattva skillfully knows ten kinds of dharmas. What are these ten? Namely: skillfully knowing how every living being receives birth; skillfully knowing the arising of every affliction; skillfully knowing the continuity of habitual tendencies; skillfully knowing the skillful means one practices; skillfully knowing immeasurable dharmas; skillfully understanding every deportment; skillfully knowing the distinctions among worlds; skillfully knowing matters of the past and the future; skillfully knowing how to proclaim the worldly truth; and skillfully knowing how to proclaim the ultimate truth. These are the ten. Son of the Buddha! This bodhisattva should be urged to study ten further dharmas. What are these ten? Namely: skillful mastery of the Dharma-king's own domain; the Dharma-king's own rules and measures; the Dharma-king's own palace; entering into the Dharma-king's own domain; contemplating the Dharma-king's own domain; the Dharma-king's own consecration; the Dharma-king's own sustaining power; the Dharma-king's own fearlessness; the Dharma-king's own repose; and the Dharma-king's own praise. Why is this? It is in order to cause one to advance further, the mind free of any obstruction at all; so that, whatever Dharma he hears, he opens and understands it entirely of himself, and not by means of another's teaching."

The Tenth Abode: Consecration

The final abode reaches a wisdom of astonishing scale — shaking, illumining, and sustaining countless worlds, opening the Dharma to countless living beings — a domain of body, wisdom, and spiritual power so vast that the sūtra declares it unknowable even to a Dharma-prince bodhisattva, one stage below. This completes the full sequence of ten abodes.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Son of the Buddha! What is meant by the bodhisattva's Abode of Consecration? This bodhisattva attains and accomplishes ten kinds of wisdom. What are these ten? Namely: shaking countless worlds; illumining countless worlds; sustaining countless worlds; going to countless worlds; adorning and purifying countless worlds; opening up and revealing the Dharma to countless living beings; observing and contemplating countless living beings; knowing the faculties of countless living beings; causing countless living beings to enter the path; and causing countless living beings to be tamed and subdued. These are the ten. Son of the Buddha! This bodhisattva's own body and bodily deeds, his spiritual powers and transformative manifestations, his wisdom of the past, his wisdom of the future, and his wisdom of the present that accomplishes buddha-lands, the domain of his own mind and the domain of his own wisdom — all of these cannot be known, not even by a Dharma-prince bodhisattva. Son of the Buddha! This bodhisattva should be urged to study every buddha's ten kinds of wisdom. What are these ten? Namely: the wisdom of the three periods of time; the wisdom of the Buddha's own Dharma; the unobstructed wisdom of the Dharma-realm; the boundless wisdom of the Dharma-realm; the wisdom that fills every world entirely; the wisdom that universally illumines every world; the wisdom that sustains every world; the wisdom that knows every living being; the wisdom that knows every dharma; and the wisdom that knows every buddha throughout the boundless. Why is this? It is in order to cause the growth of omniscience itself; so that, whatever Dharma he hears, he opens and understands it entirely of himself, and not by means of another's teaching."

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

This closes the prose teaching of the full Ten Abodes, from the first stirring of the awakening-mind through to a wisdom the text itself declares unknowable even one stage below. The image of royal succession, first opened at the fourth abode's Noble Birth, reaches its natural conclusion here: consecration (灌頂) is the same rite Part 50 described the tenth-ground bodhisattva receiving from every buddha's own hand, poured now upon a bodhisattva only at the very first of the sūtra's four great stages of the path — Abodes, Practices, Dedications, and Grounds. Read against that later scene, the Ten Abodes' own consecration reads less as an ending than as the first of several such moments the path will offer, each one a genuine culmination in its own right and, at the same time, only a beginning relative to what still lies ahead.

Part 78 Complete

This closes Part 78 and the prose teaching of all Ten Abodes. Chapter 15 continues in Part 79 as the ground itself confirms this teaching with a sixfold earthquake, and countless bodhisattvas — every one of them also named Dharma Wisdom — arrive to bear witness that this same Dharma is being taught, in exactly these same words, throughout every world of the ten directions at once.
