Ten Kinds of Māra-Deeds

Following the ten kinds of māra, this list turns to concrete deeds: forgetting the mind of awakening while still practicing, teaching the profound dharma only for wealth or reverence, and — in its ninth entry — delighting only in the company of those already liberated while refusing to draw close to or teach those still in need.

Favoring Only the Already Liberated

The ninth entry names a subtle failure: delighting in the company of those who have already attained liberation and peace while refusing to draw close to or teach those who have not — a māra-deed built not from wrongdoing but from choosing comfortable company over the harder work of teaching those still in need.

佛子!菩薩摩訶薩有十種魔業。何等為十?所謂:忘失菩提心修諸善根,是為魔業;惡心布施,瞋心持戒,捨惡性人,遠懈怠者,輕慢亂意,譏嫌惡慧,是為魔業;於甚深法心生慳吝,有堪化者而不為說,若得財利恭敬供養,雖非法器而強為說,是為魔業;不樂聽聞諸波羅蜜,假使聞說而不修行,雖亦修行多生懈怠,以懈怠故,志意狹劣,不求無上大菩提法,是為魔業;遠善知識,近惡知識,樂求二乘,不樂受生,志尚涅槃離欲寂靜,是為魔業;

"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of māra-deeds. What are these ten? Namely: forgetting the mind of awakening while cultivating roots of goodness — this is a māra-deed. Giving with an ill will, upholding precepts with an angry mind, abandoning those of an evil nature, staying far from the indolent, holding others in contemptuous and confused regard, mocking and disdaining inferior wisdom — this is a māra-deed. Giving rise to stinginess of mind toward the profound dharma, refusing to teach one capable of being transformed, yet forcibly teaching one who is not a fit vessel for the dharma merely because wealth, profit, reverence, or offerings are obtained — this is a māra-deed. Taking no delight in hearing the pāramitās spoken of, or hearing them spoken of and yet not practicing them, or practicing them yet repeatedly giving rise to indolence, and because of that indolence, the resolve growing narrow and inferior, no longer seeking the unsurpassed, great dharma of awakening — this is a māra-deed. Staying far from good spiritual friends, drawing close to bad spiritual friends, delighting in seeking the two lesser vehicles, taking no delight in taking rebirth, and prizing instead the stillness of nirvāṇa free of desire — this is a māra-deed.

Ru-Yi Translation

Giving rise to a mind of hatred and anger toward a bodhisattva, regarding them with a hostile eye, seeking out their faults and failings, speaking of their wrongdoing, and cutting off whatever wealth, profit, or offerings belong to them — this is a māra-deed. Slandering the true dharma and taking no delight in hearing it, or hearing it and thereupon reviling it, seeing another teach the dharma and giving rise to no reverence, declaring one's own teaching alone to be correct and every other teaching entirely wrong — this is a māra-deed. Delighting in studying worldly treatises, clever arts, and ornate language, opening up and expounding the two lesser vehicles while concealing and covering over the profound dharma, or bestowing a wondrous meaning upon one unfit to receive it, straying far from awakening and dwelling instead on a wrong path — this is a māra-deed. Constantly delighting in drawing close to and making offerings only to those who have already attained liberation and already found peace, while refusing to draw close to or teach those who have not yet attained liberation and not yet found peace — this is a māra-deed. Increasing self-conceit, having no reverence, frequently inflicting harm and vexation upon sentient beings, not seeking the true dharma's genuine wisdom, the mind corrupt and hard to awaken — this is a māra-deed. These are the ten. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva should swiftly leave all of these behind and diligently seek the buddha's own deeds.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

已得解脫、已安隱者常樂親近而供養之,未得解脫、未安隱者不肯親近亦不教化 — constantly delighting in drawing close to and making offerings only to those who have already attained liberation and already found peace, while refusing to draw close to or teach those who have not yet attained liberation and not yet found peace. Unlike the more overt failures elsewhere in this list, this entry describes something that could easily pass for ordinary discernment — preferring accomplished company — yet it is named a māra-deed precisely because it abandons those who most need to be taught.
