Leaving Behind Māra-Deeds, Ten Kinds of Seeing the Buddha
Ten kinds of leaving behind māra-deeds answer the previous list point for point, moving from drawing close to good spiritual friends to sharing roots of goodness equally with every bodhisattva. A tightly compressed list of ten kinds of seeing the buddha follows, naming ten distinct buddhas — the buddha who abides in the world, the vow-buddha, the karmic-recompense buddha, and more — each paired with its own particular manner of being seen.
Ten Buddhas, Ten Ways of Seeing
The second list departs from the surrounding pattern of ten qualities of one thing: it names ten different buddhas outright — the buddha who abides in the world and attains right awakening, the vow-buddha, the karmic-recompense buddha, the sustaining buddha, the nirvāṇa buddha, the dharma-realm buddha, the mind-buddha, the samādhi buddha, the original-nature buddha, and the buddha who accords with delight — and gives each one its own distinct manner of being seen.
"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of leaving behind māra-deeds. What are these ten? Namely: drawing close to good spiritual friends, revering and making offerings to them — this leaves behind māra-deeds. Not elevating oneself, not praising oneself — this leaves behind māra-deeds. Believing and understanding the buddha's own profound dharma without slandering it — this leaves behind māra-deeds. Never forgetting the mind of all-knowing wisdom — this leaves behind māra-deeds. Diligently cultivating wondrous practice, constantly free of heedlessness — this leaves behind māra-deeds. Constantly seeking every dharma of the bodhisattva treasury — this leaves behind māra-deeds. Constantly expounding the dharma, the mind never wearied — this leaves behind māra-deeds. Taking refuge in every buddha of the ten directions, giving rise to the thought of their protection — this leaves behind māra-deeds. Believing, receiving, and calling to mind every buddha, and the empowerment of their spiritual power — this leaves behind māra-deeds. And planting the same roots of goodness together with every bodhisattva, equal and without duality — this leaves behind māra-deeds. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within this dharma, they are able to leave behind every path of māra.
Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of seeing the buddha. What are these ten? Namely: the unattached seeing of the buddha who abides in the world and attains right awakening; the seeing of the vow-buddha's own arising; the deeply believing seeing of the karmic-recompense buddha; the accordant seeing of the sustaining buddha; the deeply penetrating seeing of the nirvāṇa buddha; the universally arriving seeing of the dharma-realm buddha; the abiding seeing of the mind-buddha; the measureless, unsupported seeing of the samādhi buddha; the clearly understanding seeing of the original-nature buddha; and the universally receiving seeing of the buddha who accords with delight. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within this dharma, they constantly attain the vision of the unsurpassed tathāgata.
心佛安住見 — the abiding seeing of the mind-buddha. Naming a buddha of mind itself, alongside a buddha who abides in the world, a buddha of karmic recompense, and a buddha of original nature, this list treats "buddha" not as a single figure seen in different circumstances but as ten genuinely distinct aspects, each requiring its own particular way of being seen.
Part 783 Complete
