Ten Kinds of Wisdom-Deeds
Opening with the direct claim that leaving behind the ten arrogant deeds yields these ten wisdom-deeds, the list moves from believing karmic recompense and never abandoning the mind of awakening to regarding every pāramitā with the thought of a loving mother and every skillful means with the thought of a loving father.
A Mother in the Pāramitās, a Father in Skillful Means
The eighth wisdom-deed pairs two kinds of parental feeling with two kinds of practice: the pāramitās are regarded with the thought of a loving mother, skillful means with the thought of a loving father, and both together become the deep, pure mind by which one enters the house of awakening.
若諸菩薩離此慢業,則得十種智業。何等為十?所謂:信解業報,不壞因果,是智業;不捨菩提心,常念諸佛,是智業;近善知識恭敬供養,其心尊重終無厭怠,是智業;樂法、樂義無有厭足,遠離邪念,勤修正念,是智業;於一切眾生離於我慢,於諸菩薩起如來想,愛重正法如惜己身,尊奉如來如護己命,於修行者生諸佛想,是智業;
"If bodhisattvas leave behind these arrogant deeds, they attain ten kinds of wisdom-deeds. What are these ten? Namely: believing and understanding karmic recompense, never damaging cause and effect — this is a wisdom-deed. Never abandoning the mind of awakening, constantly calling every buddha to mind — this is a wisdom-deed. Drawing close to good spiritual friends, revering and making offerings to them, the mind reverent and never wearied or indolent — this is a wisdom-deed. Delighting in the dharma, delighting in its meaning, without ever growing weary, staying far from wrong thought, diligently cultivating right mindfulness — this is a wisdom-deed. Being free of self-conceit toward every sentient being, regarding every bodhisattva with the thought that they are a tathāgata, cherishing the true dharma as one cherishes one's own body, honoring the tathāgata as one guards one's own life, and giving rise to the thought of a buddha toward every practitioner — this is a wisdom-deed.
Deeds of body, speech, and mind free of every unwholesome thing, praising the worthy and the noble, according with awakening — this is a wisdom-deed. Never damaging dependent origination, staying far from every wrong view, breaking through darkness to attain brightness, illuminating every dharma — this is a wisdom-deed. Practicing in accordance with the ten kinds of dedication, regarding every pāramitā with the thought of a loving mother, regarding skillful means with the thought of a loving father, entering the house of awakening with a deep and pure mind — this is a wisdom-deed. Constantly and diligently accumulating giving, precepts, extensive learning, calm and insight, and merit and wisdom, and every such dharma that supports the path, without ever growing weary — this is a wisdom-deed. If there is a single deed praised by the buddhas, able to destroy every māra's affliction and contention, able to leave behind every obstruction, hindrance, entanglement, and bond, able to teach and tame every sentient being, able to accord with wisdom and gather in the true dharma, able to adorn and purify every buddha-land, and able to give rise to superknowledge and clarity — diligently cultivating every one of these without ever growing indolent or regressing — this too is a wisdom-deed. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within these, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed, great wisdom-deed of every skillful means.
於諸波羅蜜起慈母想,於善巧方便起慈父想 — regarding every pāramitā with the thought of a loving mother, regarding skillful means with the thought of a loving father. This entry gives the pāramitās and skillful means a household of their own: the pāramitās nurture as a mother nurtures, skillful means guides as a father guides, and together they raise the practitioner toward the house of awakening the next clause names outright.
