Ten Kinds of Being Seized by the Dharma

This list compresses a wide sweep of teaching into ten entries: the three marks of impermanence, suffering, and non-self; nirvāṇa as stillness itself; dependent origination running forward into ignorance and old age and reversed into their cessation; and the three vehicles each traced back to the specific teaching that gives rise to it.

Ignorance to Old Age, and Back Again

The sixth entry compresses the entire chain of dependent origination into a single formula, naming only its first link and its last: improper reflection gives rise to ignorance, and ignorance leads onward all the way to old age and death; then, run in reverse, the cessation of improper reflection ends ignorance, and the ending of ignorance leads onward to the ending of old age and death.

佛子!菩薩摩訶薩有十種法所攝持。何等為十?所謂:知一切行無常,法所攝持;知一切行苦,法所攝持;知一切行無我,法所攝持;知一切法寂滅涅槃,法所攝持;知諸法從緣起,無緣則不起,法所攝持;知不正思惟故起於無明,無明起故乃至老死起,不正思惟滅故無明滅,無明滅故乃至老死滅,法所攝持;

"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of being seized by the dharma. What are these ten? Namely: knowing that every conditioned formation is impermanent — this is being seized by the dharma. Knowing that every conditioned formation is suffering — this is being seized by the dharma. Knowing that every conditioned formation is without self — this is being seized by the dharma. Knowing that every dharma is still, extinguished, nirvāṇa — this is being seized by the dharma. Knowing that every dharma arises from conditions, and that without conditions nothing arises — this is being seized by the dharma. Knowing that improper reflection gives rise to ignorance, that the arising of ignorance leads onward all the way to the arising of old age and death, that the cessation of improper reflection causes the cessation of ignorance, and that the cessation of ignorance leads onward all the way to the cessation of old age and death — this is being seized by the dharma.

Knowing that the three gates of liberation give rise to the śrāvaka vehicle, and that realizing the dharma free of contention gives rise to the vehicle of the solitary awakened one — this is being seized by the dharma. Knowing that the six pāramitās and the four means of attraction give rise to the great vehicle — this is being seized by the dharma. Knowing that every land, every dharma, every sentient being, and every age is the domain of the buddha's own wisdom — this is being seized by the dharma. And knowing how to cut off every thought, relinquish every grasping, leave behind the prior and later limits, and accord with nirvāṇa — this is being seized by the dharma. These are the ten. If bodhisattvas abide within these, they attain every buddha's own unsurpassed being seized by the dharma.

知三解脫門出生聲聞乘,證無諍法出生獨覺乘,知六波羅蜜、四攝法出生大乘 — knowing that the three gates of liberation give rise to the śrāvaka vehicle, that realizing the dharma free of contention gives rise to the vehicle of the solitary awakened one, and that the six pāramitās and the four means of attraction give rise to the great vehicle. Rather than ranking the three vehicles against one another, this entry simply names the specific teaching that produces each one, treating all three as different outcomes of different dharmas rather than as stages on a single ladder.
