Ten Deeds in Tuṣita Heaven Begin
The list turns from repeated formulas to sustained narrative: a bodhisattva dwelling in Tuṣita heaven teaches renunciation to the devas of the desire realm, corrects inverted views among the devas of the form realm, radiates light that draws beings toward rebirth in Tuṣita itself, and sees — and is seen by — every bodhisattva dwelling in every Tuṣita palace throughout the ten directions.
Merit That Never Leaves Its Own Place
The fourth deed makes an unusual claim about how these bodhisattvas encounter one another across every Tuṣita palace of the ten directions: they discuss descending into the womb, birth, going forth, and reaching the site of awakening, manifesting the practice behind that great wisdom — and yet, the text insists, their merit never once departs from its own original place even as it manifests all of this elsewhere.
"A bodhisattva-mahāsattva, dwelling in Tuṣita heaven, has ten deeds that are carried out there. What are these ten? Namely: for the sake of the sons of the devas of the desire realm, teaching the dharma of renunciation, saying, 'Every sovereignty is impermanent; every pleasure will in the end decline and pass away' — urging those devas to give rise to the mind of awakening. This is the first deed. For the sake of the devas of the form realm, teaching the entering into and emerging from every dhyāna, liberation, and samādhi; and for any among them who give rise to craving and attachment within these, and who, because of that craving, further give rise to the view of self, wrong views, ignorance, and the like, teaching them the wisdom of things exactly as they are; and for any who, toward every form dharma and formless dharma, give rise to an inverted notion, taking them to be pure, teaching that they are impure and altogether impermanent, urging them to give rise to the mind of awakening. This is the second deed. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva, dwelling in Tuṣita heaven, enters a samādhi named Light-Adornment; the body emits light that universally illuminates a great trichiliocosm, and according to the minds of sentient beings, teaches the dharma through every kind of sound; sentient beings, having heard it, have their minds of faith purified, and at the end of their lives are born within Tuṣita heaven — urging them, too, to give rise to the mind of awakening. This is the third deed.
A bodhisattva-mahāsattva in Tuṣita heaven, with an unobstructed eye, universally sees every bodhisattva within every Tuṣita heaven throughout the ten directions, and every one of those bodhisattvas likewise sees this one; having seen one another, they discuss the wondrous dharma, namely: descending in spirit into the mother's womb, the initial birth, going forth from home, proceeding to the site of awakening, complete with great adornment; and they further manifest the practice they have carried out since ages past, because it is that very practice which accomplishes this great wisdom; and though their merit never departs from its own original place, they are still able to manifest matters such as these. This is the fourth deed. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva, dwelling in Tuṣita heaven, has every assembly of bodhisattvas from every Tuṣita palace throughout the ten directions gather together, reverently surrounding them; at that time, the bodhisattva-mahāsattva, wishing to cause every one of those bodhisattvas to have their vows fulfilled and to give rise to joy, expounds a dharma-gate according to whatever ground each bodhisattva ought to abide upon, whatever they should practice and cut off, and whatever they should cultivate and realize; those bodhisattvas, having heard the dharma spoken, are all greatly joyful, attaining what they had never had before, and each returns to their own land and the palace where they dwell. This is the fifth deed.
所有功德不離本處,而能示現如是等事 — their merit never departs from its own original place, and yet they are still able to manifest matters such as these. Placed after a scene of bodhisattvas across every Tuṣita palace of the ten directions seeing one another and rehearsing the whole biography of a buddha's descent, this clause insists that none of it requires actually leaving where one already is.
Part 789 Complete
