Ten Events Descending from Tuṣita Complete
The final five events move from a light that draws fellow bodhisattvas down to be born alongside this one, to a light adorning the very womb that will receive him, to a closing light that shows every onlooker, according to their own capacity, the bodhisattva's entire life at once — dwelling in Tuṣita, entering the womb, being born, going forth, awakening, subduing māra, teaching, and entering nirvāṇa — bringing fascicle fifty-eight to its close.
A Whole Life Seen at Once
The tenth event closes both the list and the fascicle on a single striking image: one light, emitted from the bodhisattva's own minor excellent marks, shows different onlookers different moments of an entire life simultaneously — one sees him still in Tuṣita, another sees the moment of birth, another the going forth, another the awakening, another the final entry into nirvāṇa — a whole biography compressed into one instant of light.
佛子！菩薩摩訶薩於兜率天將下生時，從其身上一切毛孔放大光明，名：分別眾生，普照一切大千世界，遍觸一切諸菩薩身，復觸一切諸天世人；諸菩薩等咸作是念：『我應住此，供養如來，教化眾生。』是為第六所示現事。佛子！菩薩摩訶薩於兜率天將下生時，從大摩尼寶藏殿中放大光明，名：善住觀察，照此菩薩當生之處所託王宮；其光照已，諸餘菩薩皆共隨逐下閻浮提，若於其家、若其聚落、若其城邑而現受生，為欲教化諸眾生故。是為第七所示現事。
"Son of the Buddha! When a bodhisattva-mahāsattva is about to descend and take birth from Tuṣita heaven, from every pore of the body a great light is emitted, named Discerning Sentient Beings, universally illuminating every great trichiliocosm, touching the bodies of every bodhisattva and touching every deva and every person of the world as well; every one of those bodhisattvas thereupon thinks: 'I too should remain here, making offerings to the tathāgata and teaching and transforming sentient beings.' This is the sixth manifested event. Son of the Buddha! When a bodhisattva-mahāsattva is about to descend and take birth from Tuṣita heaven, from the great jeweled treasury palace of maṇi gems a great light is emitted, named Well Abiding in Observation, illuminating the royal house where this bodhisattva is to be born; once that light has shone, every other bodhisattva follows together, descending to Jambudvīpa, manifesting the taking of birth in that same household, that same village, or that same city, in order to teach and transform every sentient being. This is the seventh manifested event.
佛子！菩薩摩訶薩於兜率天臨下生時，從天宮殿及大樓閣諸莊嚴中放大光明，名：一切宮殿清淨莊嚴，照所生母腹；光明照已，令菩薩母安隱快樂，具足成就一切功德，其母腹中自然而有廣大樓閣大摩尼寶而為莊嚴，為欲安處菩薩身故。是為第八所示現事。佛子！菩薩摩訶薩於兜率天臨下生時，從兩足下放大光明，名為：善住；若諸天子及諸梵天其命將終，蒙光照觸皆得住壽，供養菩薩從初下生乃至涅槃。是為第九所示現事。佛子！菩薩摩訶薩於兜率天臨下生時，從隨好中放大光明，名曰：眼莊嚴，示現菩薩種種諸業；時，諸人、天或見菩薩住兜率天，或見入胎，或見初生，或見出家，或見成道，或見降魔，或見轉法輪，或見入涅槃。是為第十所示現事。佛子！菩薩摩訶薩於身、於座、於宮殿、於樓閣中，放如是等百萬阿僧祇光明，悉現種種諸菩薩業；現是業已，具足一切功德法故，從兜率天下生人間。
Son of the Buddha! When a bodhisattva-mahāsattva is on the verge of descending and taking birth from Tuṣita heaven, from the heavenly palace and every adornment of its great towers a great light is emitted, named Pure Adornment of Every Palace, illuminating the womb of the mother into which he is to be born; once that light has shone, it causes the bodhisattva's mother to be peaceful and joyful, complete in every merit, and within her womb there naturally comes to be a vast tower adorned with great maṇi gems, in order to make a fitting place for the bodhisattva's own body. This is the eighth manifested event. Son of the Buddha! When a bodhisattva-mahāsattva is on the verge of descending and taking birth from Tuṣita heaven, from the soles of both feet a great light is emitted, named Well Abiding; if there are sons of devas or Brahmā devas whose lives are about to end, upon being touched by this light they all have their lifespans extended, so that they can make offerings to the bodhisattva from the very beginning of the descent to birth all the way to nirvāṇa. This is the ninth manifested event. Son of the Buddha! When a bodhisattva-mahāsattva is on the verge of descending and taking birth from Tuṣita heaven, from the minor excellent marks a great light is emitted, named Adornment of the Eye, manifesting every kind of deed of the bodhisattva; at that time, various people and devas see, each according to their own capacity, the bodhisattva dwelling in Tuṣita heaven, or entering the womb, or being newly born, or going forth from home, or attaining the way, or subduing māra, or turning the wheel of dharma, or entering nirvāṇa. This is the tenth manifested event. Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva, from the body, from the seat, from the palace, and from the towers, emits a million asaṃkhyeyas of such lights as these, manifesting every kind of bodhisattva deed; having manifested these deeds, complete in every dharma of merit, the bodhisattva then descends from Tuṣita heaven and takes birth among humans.
時，諸人、天或見菩薩住兜率天，或見入胎，或見初生，或見出家，或見成道，或見降魔，或見轉法輪，或見入涅槃 — at that time, various people and devas see, each according to their own capacity, the bodhisattva dwelling in Tuṣita heaven, or entering the womb, or being newly born, or going forth from home, or attaining the way, or subduing māra, or turning the wheel of dharma, or entering nirvāṇa. A single light here does not show everyone the same thing; it shows each viewer whichever moment of an entire life corresponds to what they themselves are ready to see.
