Ten Kinds of Most Subtle Destiny, Ten Kinds of Birth

Ten kinds of most subtle destiny compress an entire buddha's biography — arousing the mind of awakening, dwelling in Tuṣita, birth, youth, the royal palace, going forth, austerity, awakening, teaching, and parinirvāṇa — into events all manifested within the womb alone. Ten kinds of birth follow, closing on a birth so consequential it shakes every buddha-land and gathers measureless bodhisattvas at once.

An Entire Life, Folded into the Womb

The first list does not describe events that happen instead of or alongside the womb; it describes the entire span of a buddha's life — from the first arousing of the mind of awakening through parinirvāṇa itself — as already manifested within the womb, the womb becoming a single point through which every later stage of the path is compressed and made present at once.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of most subtle destiny. What are these ten? Namely: within the womb, manifesting the initial arousing of the mind of awakening, all the way through to the ground of consecration; within the womb, manifesting dwelling in Tuṣita heaven; within the womb, manifesting the initial birth; within the womb, manifesting the stage of youth; within the womb, manifesting dwelling in the royal palace; within the womb, manifesting going forth from home; within the womb, manifesting austere practice, proceeding to the site of awakening, and attaining perfect awakening; within the womb, manifesting turning the wheel of dharma; within the womb, manifesting parinirvāṇa; and within the womb, manifesting the great subtlety, namely: the measureless, distinct gateways of every bodhisattva practice and every tathāgata's own sovereign spiritual power. Son of the Buddha! These are the ten kinds of subtle destiny of a bodhisattva-mahāsattva within the womb. If bodhisattvas abide within this dharma, they attain the tathāgata's own unsurpassed, great wisdom of subtle destiny.

Ru-Yi Translation

Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva has ten kinds of birth. What are these ten? Namely: a birth that leaves behind foolishness, with right mindfulness and right knowing; a birth that emits a great net of light universally illuminating a great trichiliocosm; a birth that abides in the final existence, never again receiving a subsequent body; a birth of no birth and no arising; a birth that knows the three realms to be exactly like an illusion; a birth that universally manifests a body throughout the worlds of the ten directions; a birth of the body that realizes the wisdom of all-knowing wisdom; a birth of the body that emits the light of every buddha, universally awakening every sentient being; and a birth of the body that enters the samādhi of great wisdom's own observation. Son of the Buddha! When the bodhisattva is born, every buddha-land is shaken, every sentient being is set on the path to liberation, every evil destiny is extinguished, every māra is outshone, and measureless bodhisattvas all come together in assembly. Son of the Buddha! These are a bodhisattva-mahāsattva's ten kinds of birth; it is in order to tame sentient beings that he manifests in this way.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

The list of birth-kinds names only nine distinct "birth of..." formulas before the text moves into a closing description of the birth's effects — every buddha-land shaken, every māra outshone, measureless bodhisattvas gathering — and then calls the whole set "ten kinds of birth." This translation represents the count exactly as the source gives it, the same way an earlier list's eleven items under a stated count of ten were represented earlier in this fascicle-by-fascicle translation, without adjusting the source to resolve the discrepancy.

Part 794 Complete

This continues chapter thirty-eight, 離世間品, in fascicle fifty-nine. Part 795 opens ten reasons a bodhisattva smiles and makes a private vow to himself, beginning with the thought that he alone, among a world sunk in the mire of desire, can offer rescue.
