Ten Events Sitting at the Site of Awakening, Ten Unprecedented Events
Ten events mark the bodhisattva's sitting at the site of awakening, from shaking every world to receiving a pure place upheld by every tathāgata's own spiritual power. Ten unprecedented events follow, closing on a striking detail: every grass, tree, and thicket throughout every world — every insentient thing — bends its own form and lowers its own shadow, turning toward the place where he sits.
Even the Grass Turns Toward Him
The fourth unprecedented event extends reverence past every sentient audience already named elsewhere in this sequence — bodhisattvas, devas, humans — to include grass, trees, and every thicket throughout every world: every insentient thing bends its own form and lowers its own shadow, turning toward the site of awakening without anyone having asked it to.
「佛子！菩薩摩訶薩坐道場有十種事。何等為十？所謂：坐道場時，種種震動一切世界；坐道場時，平等照耀一切世界；坐道場時，除滅一切諸惡趣苦；坐道場時，令一切世界金剛所成；坐道場時，普觀一切諸佛如來師子之座；坐道場時，心如虛空，無所分別；坐道場時，隨其所應，現身威儀；坐道場時，隨順安住金剛三昧；坐道場時，受一切如來神力所持清淨妙處；坐道場時，自善根力悉能加被一切眾生。是為十。
"Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva sitting at the site of awakening has ten events. What are these ten? Namely: when sitting at the site of awakening, he shakes every world in every kind of way; when sitting at the site of awakening, he illuminates every world equally; when sitting at the site of awakening, he extinguishes the suffering of every evil destiny; when sitting at the site of awakening, he causes every world to be made of diamond; when sitting at the site of awakening, he universally beholds the lion's seat of every buddha-tathāgata; when sitting at the site of awakening, his mind is like empty space, without any discrimination; when sitting at the site of awakening, according to what is fitting, he manifests his body's own dignified bearing; when sitting at the site of awakening, he accords with and abides in the diamond samādhi; when sitting at the site of awakening, he receives the pure, wondrous place upheld by the spiritual power of every tathāgata; and when sitting at the site of awakening, the power of his own roots of goodness is entirely able to empower every sentient being. These are the ten.
「佛子！菩薩摩訶薩坐道場時，有十種奇特未曾有事。何等為十？佛子！菩薩摩訶薩坐道場時，十方世界一切如來皆現其前，咸舉右手而稱讚言：『善哉善哉！無上導師！』是為第一未曾有事。菩薩摩訶薩坐道場時，一切如來皆悉護念，與其威力，是為第二未曾有事。菩薩摩訶薩坐道場時，宿世同行諸菩薩眾悉來圍遶，以種種莊嚴具恭敬供養，是為第三未曾有事。菩薩摩訶薩坐道場時，一切世界草木、叢林諸無情物，皆曲身低影，歸向道場，是為第四未曾有事。菩薩摩訶薩坐道場時，入三昧，名：觀察法界，此三昧力能令菩薩一切諸行悉得圓滿，是為第五未曾有事。
Son of the Buddha! A bodhisattva-mahāsattva, when sitting at the site of awakening, has ten unprecedented, extraordinary events. What are these ten? Son of the Buddha! When a bodhisattva-mahāsattva sits at the site of awakening, every tathāgata throughout the worlds of the ten directions appears before him, each raising their right hand and praising him, saying: "Excellent, excellent! Unsurpassed guide!" This is the first unprecedented event. When a bodhisattva-mahāsattva sits at the site of awakening, every tathāgata mindfully protects him, granting him their own awesome power. This is the second unprecedented event. When a bodhisattva-mahāsattva sits at the site of awakening, every assembly of bodhisattvas who practiced alongside him in ages past all come to surround him, revering and making offerings to him with every kind of adornment. This is the third unprecedented event. When a bodhisattva-mahāsattva sits at the site of awakening, every grass, tree, and thicket throughout every world, every insentient thing, bends its own form and lowers its own shadow, turning toward the site of awakening. This is the fourth unprecedented event. When a bodhisattva-mahāsattva sits at the site of awakening, he enters a samādhi named Observing the Dharma-Realm; the power of this samādhi is able to bring every one of the bodhisattva's own practices to complete fulfillment. This is the fifth unprecedented event.
菩薩摩訶薩坐道場時，得陀羅尼，名：最上離垢妙光海藏，能受一切諸佛如來大雲法雨，是為第六未曾有事。菩薩摩訶薩坐道場時，以威德力興上妙供具，遍一切世界供養諸佛，是為第七未曾有事。菩薩摩訶薩坐道場時，住最勝智，悉現了知一切眾生諸根意行，是為第八未曾有事。菩薩摩訶薩坐道場時，入三昧，名：善覺，此三昧力能令其身充滿三世盡虛空界一切世界，是為第九未曾有事。菩薩摩訶薩坐道場時，得離垢光明無礙大智，令其身業普入三世，是為第十未曾有事。佛子！是為菩薩摩訶薩坐道場時，十種奇特未曾有事。
When a bodhisattva-mahāsattva sits at the site of awakening, he attains a dhāraṇī named Most Excellent Treasury of the Ocean of Wondrous Light Free of Defilement, able to receive the great cloud and rain of dharma of every buddha-tathāgata. This is the sixth unprecedented event. When a bodhisattva-mahāsattva sits at the site of awakening, through the power of his own awesome virtue he calls forth the most excellent offerings, making offerings to every buddha throughout every world. This is the seventh unprecedented event. When a bodhisattva-mahāsattva sits at the site of awakening, abiding in the most excellent wisdom, he manifests fully knowing every sentient being's own faculties, intentions, and conduct. This is the eighth unprecedented event. When a bodhisattva-mahāsattva sits at the site of awakening, he enters a samādhi named Skillful Awakening; the power of this samādhi is able to cause his own body to fill every world throughout the three times, to the very limit of empty space. This is the ninth unprecedented event. When a bodhisattva-mahāsattva sits at the site of awakening, he attains the great, unobstructed wisdom of light free of defilement, causing the deeds of his own body to universally enter the three times. This is the tenth unprecedented event. Son of the Buddha! These are the ten unprecedented, extraordinary events of a bodhisattva-mahāsattva when sitting at the site of awakening.
一切世界草木、叢林諸無情物，皆曲身低影，歸向道場 — every grass, tree, and thicket throughout every world, every insentient thing, bends its own form and lowers its own shadow, turning toward the site of awakening. Placed between an assembly of fellow bodhisattvas bringing offerings and a samādhi that perfects every practice, this fourth event quietly extends the scene's reverence to things with no mind at all to feel it.
