Naming the Teaching, the Buddhas' Praise
After everything this chapter has unfolded across two fascicles and hundreds of ten-part lists, it now names itself — first briefly, as the Bodhisattva's Vast and Pure Practice, then in a long compound title tying it to decisive meaning, every dharma, and detachment from the world. Every buddha of the ten directions then appears before Samantabhadra, revealed here as the one who has spoken this entire teaching, to praise him by name.
The Chapter Names Itself
Naming a teaching within the teaching itself is unusual, and this chapter does it twice: first with a short title, the Bodhisattva's Vast and Pure Practice, and then with a long compound name that folds in decisive meaning, universal entry into every dharma, and transcendence of the world — the very name 離世間品, detachment from the world, spoken by the text describing itself.
"Son of the Buddha! This dharma-gate is named: the Bodhisattva's Vast and Pure Practice. It is proclaimed together by measureless buddhas, able to cause the wise to understand measureless meanings and all give rise to joy, and to cause every bodhisattva's own great vow and great practice to continue without interruption. Son of the Buddha! If there are sentient beings who attain hearing of this dharma, and having heard it, believe and understand it, and having understood it, practice it, they will certainly and swiftly attain unsurpassed, perfect, complete awakening. Why is this? Because they practice exactly as it is spoken. Son of the Buddha! If bodhisattvas do not practice exactly as it is spoken, know that such a person is thereby forever separated from the buddha's own awakening; for this reason, bodhisattvas should practice exactly as it is spoken. Son of the Buddha! This chapter — the domain of every bodhisattva's own merit and practice, the flower of decisive meaning, universally entering every dharma, universally giving rise to all-knowing wisdom, transcending every worldly thing, leaving behind the path of the two lesser vehicles, shared with no sentient being at all, entirely able to illuminate every dharma-gate, and increasing sentient beings' own world-transcending roots of goodness — the chapter of detachment from the world, should be revered, should be listened to and received, should be recited and upheld, should be reflected upon, should be delighted in through aspiration, and should be practiced; if one is able to do so, know that such a person swiftly attains unsurpassed, perfect, complete awakening.
When this chapter was spoken, through the buddha's own spiritual power, and because the nature of this dharma-gate is such, every measureless, boundless, asaṃkhyeya world throughout the ten directions was greatly shaken, and a great light universally shone forth. At that time, every buddha throughout the ten directions appeared before the bodhisattva Samantabhadra, praising him, saying: "Excellent, excellent! Son of the Buddha! You have been able to speak this chapter — the domain of every bodhisattva-mahāsattva's own merit and practice, the flower of decisive meaning, universally entering every buddha-dharma, the dharma-gate of transcending the world. Son of the Buddha! You have already skillfully studied this dharma, and skillfully spoken this dharma. You uphold and protect this dharma through your own awesome power, and we, every buddha, all rejoice in this together; and just as we buddhas rejoice in you, so too does every buddha, all in the very same way. Son of the Buddha! We, every buddha, together with one mind, uphold and protect this sūtra, causing every assembly of bodhisattvas, present and future, who has not yet heard it, to come to hear it." At that time, the bodhisattva-mahāsattva Samantabhadra, sustained by the buddhas' own spiritual power, observed every great assembly throughout the ten directions, together with the entire dharma-realm, and spoke in verse, saying:
爾時,十方諸佛皆現普賢菩薩前,讚言 — at that time, every buddha throughout the ten directions appeared before the bodhisattva Samantabhadra, praising him. Only here, near the very close of this immense chapter, does the text name its speaker outright. Everything from the ten pāramitās through the ten kinds of buddha-deeds, spoken across two full fascicles, is retroactively revealed as Samantabhadra's own teaching, now praised in person by every buddha of the ten directions.
Part 802 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-eight, 離世間品, in fascicle fifty-nine. Part 803 opens Samantabhadra's own closing verse, a vast sequence of metaphors — the bodhisattva as lotus, tree, lion, ship's captain — that will bring both this chapter and fascicle fifty-nine to their close.
