Samantabhadra's Verse Concludes

The verse's final image builds a wheel-turning king entirely from dharma — the pāramitās his wheel, wisdom his jewel, samādhi his city wall, patience his unshakeable armor — before Samantabhadra turns, in the very last lines, to address the reader directly: whoever wishes to be complete in this merit, to free every being from suffering, and to become equal to every buddha in body, speech, and mind should arouse the diamond mind and study this very practice.

Arouse the Diamond Mind

After two full fascicles and hundreds of ten-part lists, the chapter closes not with another list but with a direct address: if you wish for this merit, for the end of every being's suffering, and for a body, speech, and mind equal to every buddha's own, arouse the diamond mind, and study this very practice — the entire teaching handed, in its last line, from Samantabhadra to whoever is reading it.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Body, speech, and mind are equal, exactly like empty space; pure precepts are his anointing fragrance, every practice his own clothing, the silk of dharma adorning his pure crown, all-knowing wisdom his own maṇi jewel — his merit lacking nothing at all, he receives consecration and ascends to the throne of kingship.

The pāramitās are his wheel, every superknowledge his elephants, spiritual swiftness his horses, wisdom his own bright jewel.

Wondrous practice his palace attendants, the four means of attraction his treasury minister, skillful means his general — the bodhisattva is a wheel-turning king such as this.

Samādhi his own city wall, empty stillness his own palace, loving-kindness his armor and wisdom his sword, mindfulness his bow and sharp arrows.

Raising high the canopy of spiritual power, erecting far above the banner of wisdom, the power of patience unshakeable, he breaks straight through the army of the māra king.

Total retention his own level ground, every practice his flowing rivers, pure wisdom his gushing spring, wondrous insight his forest of trees.

Emptiness his own clear, pure pond, the factors of awakening his lotus blossoms, spiritual power his own adornment, samādhi his constant delight.

Reflection his palace attendants, the ambrosia of nectar his fine food, the flavor of liberation his own drink, playing freely among the three vehicles.

此諸菩薩行,微妙轉增上,
無量劫修行,其心不厭足。

供養一切佛,嚴淨一切剎,
普令一切眾,安住一切智。

一切剎微塵,悉可知其數;
一切虛空界,一沙可度量;
一切眾生心,念念可數知;
佛子諸功德,說之不可盡。

欲具此功德,及諸上妙法,
欲使諸眾生,離苦常安樂,
欲令身語意,悉與諸佛等,
應發金剛心,學此功德行。」

Ru-Yi Translation

This bodhisattva's own practice, subtle and wondrous, ever turning more excellent, cultivated across measureless kalpas, his mind never once weary or satisfied.

Making offerings to every buddha, adorning and purifying every land, he universally causes every multitude of beings to abide in all-knowing wisdom.

Every mote of dust in every land could entirely be known and counted; every realm of empty space could be measured by a single grain of sand; every thought, moment by moment, within every sentient being's mind could be known and counted — and yet the son of the Buddha's own merit can never be exhausted in the telling.

If you wish to be complete in this merit, and in every excellent, wondrous dharma; if you wish to cause every sentient being to leave behind suffering and forever dwell in peace and joy; if you wish to cause body, speech, and mind to become entirely equal to every buddha — then you should arouse the diamond mind, and study this very practice of merit."

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

應發金剛心,學此功德行 — arouse the diamond mind, and study this very practice of merit. After hundreds of ten-part lists spoken in the third person about "a bodhisattva," the chapter's very last line switches to direct address — no longer describing what a bodhisattva does, but telling the reader what to do, closing the entire teaching as an instruction rather than a description.
