Youth, Prince, and Consecration, the Ten Abodes Complete
The great hymn's final three movements restate the last of the Ten Abodes: the eighth, with a body, speech, and mind entirely without fault and a spiritual power that journeys to countless buddha-lands; the ninth, entering the Dharma-king's own domain — his palace, his consecration, his repose; and the tenth, reaching a wisdom so vast that not even a Dharma-prince bodhisattva can fully know it, completing the abode sequence of Dharma Wisdom's entire hymn.
The Eighth Abode: Youthful Innocence, in Verse
A body, speech, and mind entirely without fault, taking birth according to his own will, journeying to countless buddha-lands and serving countless buddhas without any weariness at all.
"The bodhisattva of the eighth abode, Youthful Innocence, has bodily, verbal, and mental conduct all fully complete, entirely pure and without any fault at all, taking birth according to his own will, sovereign and unhindered. Knowing every living being's own mind and what it delights in, their every manifold intent and understanding each differing, and every dharma there is belonging to them, and the marks of forming and destruction of the lands of the ten directions.
Attaining a swift and wondrous spiritual power, going wherever he thinks of within every single place, listening to and receiving the Dharma at the place of every buddha, extolling and cultivating it without any weariness or fatigue at all. Understanding entirely every single buddha-land, shaking it, sustaining it with his own power, and likewise contemplating it, transcending buddha-lands beyond all measure, journeying throughout worlds beyond all boundless number.
Inquiring into asaṃkhyeya dharmas entirely, sovereign and unhindered over whatever body he wishes to receive, his speech and voice skillful, with nothing at all left unfulfilled, serving and attending upon countless buddhas, every one of them."
The Ninth Abode: The Dharma-Prince, in Verse
Understanding worldly and ultimate truth entirely, this bodhisattva enters the Dharma-king's own domain — his palace, his consecration, his repose — cultivating right mindfulness until every single buddha manifests before him.
"The bodhisattva of the ninth abode, the Dharma-Prince, is able to see the distinctions in how living beings receive birth, and there is nothing at all he does not know of the arising of afflictions and their habitual tendencies; every skillful means he practices, he skillfully understands entirely. Every dharma is each distinct, every deportment differs, every world is not the same, and their own past and future limits differ — exactly as they are, both worldly truth and ultimate truth, he skillfully understands entirely, with nothing at all left over.
The Dharma-king's own skillful place of establishment, and, according to that very place, whatever dharma there is; the Dharma-king's own palace, whether entering into it, and likewise whatever is observed and seen within it. The Dharma-king's own Dharma of consecration, his spiritual power sustaining without any timidity or fear at all, his repose within the palace hall, and his own praise — by means of these, the Dharma-prince is instructed and taught.
Thus is it proclaimed, with nothing at all left unexhausted, causing his own mind to cling to nothing at all; understanding this and cultivating right mindfulness, every single buddha manifests before him."
The Tenth Abode: Consecration, in Verse
The final abode reaches a wisdom that shakes and illumines countless worlds, sustains and adorns them, and opens the Dharma to countless living beings — a domain of body and spiritual power that the verse declares, once again, unknowable even to a Dharma-prince bodhisattva. This completes the great hymn's own restatement of all ten abodes.
"The tenth abode's own true son of the Buddha, Consecration, fully accomplishes the most supreme and foremost dharma; the countless worlds of the ten directions, he is entirely able to shake, and his light universally illumines them. Sustaining them and going to them, likewise with nothing at all left over, purely adorning them, everything entirely complete; opening up and revealing the Dharma to countless living beings, contemplating and knowing their own faculties entirely and completely.
Giving rise to their resolve and taming and subduing them, likewise without any boundary at all, causing every one of them to head toward the great bodhi; the whole Dharma-realm entirely contemplated, the lands of the ten directions all entirely visited. Within this, his own body and what his body does, his spiritual powers and transformative manifestations, are hard to fathom at all; the domains of buddha-lands throughout the three periods of time — not even a Dharma-prince is able to understand them.
The wisdom of the one who sees all, the wisdom of the three periods of time, the wisdom that clearly understands every buddha-dharma, the unobstructed and boundless wisdom of the Dharma-realm, the wisdom that fills every world entirely, the wisdom that illumines the world, the wisdom that sustains it, the wisdom that understands living beings and every dharma, and the boundless wisdom that knows the perfectly awakened one — the Tathāgata proclaims these for him, causing every one of them to be entirely exhausted."
The verse's tenth abode closes the entire hymn's own abode sequence by echoing the prose almost word for word — the wisdom that even a Dharma-prince cannot know, the tenfold list of the buddhas' own wisdom given here as a compressed catalogue rather than the prose's fuller enumeration. Read across all ten abodes together, the hymn's own proportions tell a story the prose alone did not make as visible: ninety-two lines for the first stirring of the awakening-mind, and roughly a dozen apiece for everything that follows, all the way to consecration itself. The distance from resolve to full realization, measured in verse, turns out to be far shorter than the distance from not yet having resolved to having resolved at all.
Part 84 Complete
This closes Part 84 and the great hymn's own sequence through all ten abodes. Chapter 15 continues in Part 85 with the hymn's closing benediction, completing fascicle sixteen; the chapter itself continues into fascicle seventeen.
