A Bodhisattva Arrives from the Northeast
The fifth arrival brings an offering that echoes the very scene it is offered into: ten kinds of cloud, each one shaped like a pavilion, made of jewels, incense, sandalwood, vajra, gold, garments, and lotus flowers, spreading to cover every world in the ten directions.
An Offering That Mirrors the Scene
Every arrival so far has offered something distinct from the great pavilion where the Buddha sits — flowers, jewels, garments, mountains. This fifth bodhisattva offers pavilions themselves, ten kinds of cloud in the very shape of the structure that began this entire transformation.
東北方過不可說佛剎微塵數世界海外有世界，名：一切歡喜清淨光明網，佛號：無礙眼。彼佛眾中有菩薩，名：化現法界願月王，與世界海微塵數菩薩俱，來向佛所，悉以神力興寶樓閣雲、香樓閣雲、燒香樓閣雲、華樓閣雲、栴檀樓閣雲、金剛樓閣雲、摩尼樓閣雲、金樓閣雲、衣樓閣雲、蓮華樓閣雲，彌覆十方一切世界。至佛所已，頂禮佛足，即於東北方化作一切法界門大摩尼樓閣及無等香王蓮華藏師子之座，摩尼華網羅覆其身，著妙寶藏摩尼王冠，與其眷屬結跏趺坐。
At that time, in the northeast, beyond an ocean of worlds as numerous as unspeakably many fine motes of dust in every buddha-land, there was a world named Net of Universal Joy and Pure Light, whose buddha was named Unobstructed Eye. In that buddha's own assembly there was a bodhisattva named Manifesting-the-Dharma-Realm Vow-Moon King, who, together with bodhisattvas as numerous as fine motes of dust in an ocean of worlds, came toward the place where the Buddha was, raising up through spiritual power alone: clouds of jeweled pavilions, clouds of fragrant pavilions, clouds of burning-incense pavilions, clouds of flower pavilions, clouds of sandalwood pavilions, clouds of vajra pavilions, clouds of maṇi pavilions, clouds of golden pavilions, clouds of garment pavilions, and clouds of lotus-flower pavilions, spreading to cover every world in the ten directions. Having arrived where the Buddha was, they bowed in reverence at his feet, and then, in the northeast, conjured a great maṇi pavilion that was itself a gateway to the entire dharma-realm, together with a lion-seat of lotus-treasury made of unequaled king-of-fragrances; covered their own bodies with nets of maṇi flowers; wore a crown of wondrous jewel-treasury maṇi king; and sat down cross-legged there together with their own retinues.
寶樓閣雲、香樓閣雲……蓮華樓閣雲 — clouds of jeweled pavilions, clouds of fragrant pavilions, all the way to clouds of lotus-flower pavilions. Every arrival before this one offered something distinct from the setting itself; here the offering and the setting become the same kind of thing, ten pavilions made of cloud arriving to surround the one great pavilion that gave this entire transformation its start.
